The D'Addario EXL170-5 is D'Addario's best-selling bass string set scaled up for 5-string players. It takes the proven EXL170 formula — nickel-plated steel wound over a high-carbon steel core — and adds a .130 low-B string to round out the full range of a 5-string bass. These are long scale strings, fitting basses with a scale length up to 36¼ inches.
The round wound construction gives you that familiar bright, articulate response with clear note definition across all five strings. D'Addario winds each string on computer-controlled machines for consistent tension, reliable intonation, and a smooth surface that's comfortable under the fingers and easy on frets. The nickel-plated wrap also provides solid magnetic output, which translates well through both passive and active pickups.
String gauges are .045, .065, .080, .100, and .130 — a Regular Light set that balances flexibility with enough tension to keep the low B tracking cleanly. The entire XL line is made in the USA.
