A Blacked-Out Grand Concert That Means Business
There's something quietly cool about a guitar that doesn't try too hard. The Ibanez PC54E skips the flashy spruce-and-gloss formula and goes its own way — all-meranti construction, an open-pore weathered black finish that feels lived-in from the start, and a grand concert body that sits comfortably whether you're parked on the couch or stepping up to a mic stand. It's a purposeful instrument with a distinct character.
Meranti is a tonewood that doesn't always get the credit it deserves. It sits in a sonic neighborhood close to mahogany — warm, focused, and strong on the midrange — making it a natural fit for fingerpicking, singer-songwriter strumming, and anything that benefits from a little grit rather than sparkle. The grand concert shape keeps things balanced and responsive, with a comfortable feel for players who find full-size dreadnoughts a bit much to wrap around.
Add in a built-in pickup system that works plugged or unplugged, and the PC54E is a genuinely versatile option for players who want one guitar that handles practice at home and a small venue gig without breaking a sweat.
Meranti Throughout — Warm, Focused, and Consistent
The PC54E is built with meranti top, back, sides, and neck — a tonally unified combination that keeps the guitar's voice cohesive from string to body. Meranti delivers warmth and midrange presence, and on a grand concert body, it leans toward an intimate, focused sound rather than the boomy projection of a larger acoustic. Players who favor fingerstyle or moderate strumming tend to find this body size and wood combination especially rewarding.
The open-pore polyurethane finish on both the top and back lets the wood breathe and vibrate more freely than a thick gloss coat would. It also gives the guitar a tactile, natural feel under your hands — no sticky surface, no high-gloss sheen. The weathered black colorway adds a moodier visual character to the whole package.
The Nandu wood fretboard sits on a meranti neck with a PC neck profile — a comfortable, approachable shape that works well for extended playing sessions. With a 25-inch scale length, 1.65-inch nut width, and a 10-inch fretboard radius, the setup suits a wide range of hand sizes and playing styles.
Electronics You'll Actually Use
The Ibanez AEQ-2T preamp system handles the plugged-in side of things, offering two-band EQ (bass and treble) so you can shape your tone before it hits the PA. What makes it especially practical is the built-in chromatic tuner, which operates even when the guitar is unplugged — no fumbling for a clip-on mid-set. The Ibanez undersaddle pickup captures the natural acoustic character of the guitar and translates it cleanly through the preamp.
Chrome die-cast tuners with a 15:1 gear ratio handle stability and precision at the headstock, while Ibanez's Advantage bridge pins make string changes more straightforward than traditional pins — the bulb-shaped ends prevent over-seating and are easier to grip when it's time to restring. It's the kind of thoughtful detail that players notice after using them a few times.
