Mahogany Where It Counts
The SG Standard is built around a contoured, double-cutaway mahogany body — the same foundational tonewood choice that has defined the SG's warm, punchy character for decades. The double-cutaway design gives you unimpeded access to all 22 frets, so upper-register lead work is never a reach. The glued-in mahogany neck (set neck joint) contributes to the guitar's sustain and resonance in a way a bolt-on simply can't replicate.
The neck carries a 60s SlimTaper C profile — slim enough for quick single-note runs, comfortable enough for long practice sessions. With a 24.75" scale length, string tension sits on the slightly looser side, which makes bending a little easier without sacrificing the response you need for clean chord work.
Fretboard, Hardware, and Setup
The laurel fretboard is fitted with 22 medium jumbo frets and pearloid trapezoid inlays, sitting at a 12" radius — flat enough to keep your bends smooth, curved enough to make first-position chords feel natural. The nut width comes in at 1.692", a comfortable middle ground for both chord players and lead-focused players. A Graph Tech NuBone nut handles string lubrication without any binding issues.
Hardware is all nickel, anchored by the Epiphone LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and Stop Bar tailpiece. The LockTone design locks the bridge and tailpiece studs in place to maximize contact and sustain. Epiphone Deluxe tuners at an 18:1 ratio keep things in tune reliably night after night.
Pickups and Controls
Two Epiphone Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers handle the electronics — one at the neck, one at the bridge — wired through CTS pots to individual volume and tone controls for each pickup, with a 3-way toggle selector switch. That four-knob setup gives you fine control over your blend and output, whether you're rolling back the neck pickup for a cleaner jazz-adjacent tone or cranking the bridge pickup into crunch territory.
