A Classic Shape With Some Real Versatility Under the Hood
If you've ever wanted a Les Paul that can do more than just roar through a cranked amp, the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plustop PRO is worth a serious look. It's built around the Les Paul body shape you know — that solid mahogany chassis, the carved silhouette, the glued-in neck — and then layers on a AAA flame maple veneer top and a pair of ProBucker humbuckers that push this guitar well beyond entry-level territory. The Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish is one of those classic looks that never gets old.
The real trick up its sleeve is the push/pull coil-tapping on both volume controls. One moment you're running full humbuckers with all the warmth and sustain the Les Paul shape is known for; the next, you pull the knob and you're in single-coil territory — brighter, a little more cutting, a sound that opens up a lot of different musical doors. That kind of tonal range in one guitar is genuinely useful.
This is a used example in good condition — a solid choice if you want a versatile, full-featured Les Paul without paying new prices, and you don't mind a guitar that's been played and loved.
This Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plustop PRO is in Good condition. The guitar is fully functional and will go through a full tech set up prior to shipping. It has a scratches, marks, dents, and moderate play wear noted. Please review the photos carefully for full condition.
Solid Mahogany Body With a Flame Maple Veneer Top
The body is built from solid mahogany — the same material that gives classic Les Pauls their characteristic warmth, sustain, and weight. On top sits a AAA flame maple veneer with 1-ply cream binding, giving the guitar that vintage figured look that makes a Les Paul a Les Paul. It's a veneer, not a solid top, but the mahogany underneath is doing the heavy tonal lifting anyway.
The LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece are Epiphone's locking design, meaning they stay put without slipping — a small but meaningful improvement over non-locking versions that helps keep intonation stable and sustain consistent. Hardware is finished in nickel throughout.
ProBucker Pickups and Push/Pull Coil-Tapping
The ProBucker-2 in the neck position and the ProBucker-3 at the bridge are Epiphone's PAF-voiced humbuckers, wound with Alnico II magnets — the same magnet type found in the vintage Gibson PAF pickups that defined the Les Paul sound in the late 1950s. The ProBucker-3 is slightly overwound compared to the neck pickup, which helps balance output across positions and adds a bit more edge for lead work.
Both pickups are wired to push/pull volume pots, so coil-tapping is available on each pickup independently. Pull the neck volume and you get a single-coil neck tone; pull the bridge volume for a single-coil bridge setting. You can mix and match depending on what the song needs. It's a genuinely useful feature — not a gimmick — and it meaningfully expands what this guitar can do across different styles.
The Neck: 1960s SlimTaper D Profile
The mahogany neck is glued in (set neck joint) and features Epiphone's 1960s SlimTaper D profile — a shallower, faster neck shape compared to the chunkier '50s profiles. Scale length is the standard Les Paul 24.75 inches. The rosewood fingerboard has a 12-inch radius with 22 medium-jumbo frets and pearloid trapezoid inlays, plus 1-ply cream binding. Nut width is 1.68 inches (approximately 1-11/16").
Tuning stability is handled by Grover tuners, which are a step up from many guitars in this price range and tend to hold tune reliably under regular playing conditions. The headstock is angled at 14 degrees, which increases string pressure at the nut for better sustain without the need for string trees.
