Two Pickup Systems, One Very Cool Guitar
There's a short list of electric guitars that can genuinely do double duty — humbucker crunch for the loud set, acoustic-like shimmer for the quieter moments — without swapping guitars or tap-dancing through a pedalboard. The Epiphone Dot Ultra-339 is one of them. It pairs a pair of ProBucker humbuckers with a Shadow NanoMag acoustic pickup mounted right at the end of the fretboard, and lets you blend or switch between them on the fly. The body is a reduced-size ES-339 format — about Les Paul-sized in feel, but with that semi-hollow resonance and the classic double-cutaway look. The Pelham Blue finish gives it a retro cool that's hard to ignore. A Semi-Hollow Built Around Maple
The body is laminated maple with a solid center block — the same construction recipe that made the original ES-335 a stage staple for decades. The center block keeps feedback in check and adds sustain, while the hollow wings give you that resonant, open character you don't get from a fully solid body. Classic f-holes complete the look and the acoustic interaction.
The neck is mahogany with a SlimTaper "D" profile, glued in via a mortise and tenon joint at a 24.75" scale length. It's a comfortable, familiar feel — not a chunky vintage baseball bat, not a razor-thin shredder neck. The 12" radius rosewood fretboard has 22 medium jumbo frets, mother-of-pearl dot inlays, and a 1.68" nut width that falls right in the traditional range.
Two Pickup Systems in One Guitar
At the core of the Ultra-339's electronics are two distinct pickup systems. Up front, you get Epiphone's ProBucker-2 in the neck position and ProBucker-3 at the bridge — both wound to PAF-style specs with Alnico II magnets and nickel silver covers. They're warm, articulate humbuckers with genuine vintage character.
The second system is the Shadow NanoMag — a low-impedance pickup with active electronics, embedded at the end of the fretboard. It uses three samarium cobalt magnets and an air coil to capture string harmonics and body acoustics, producing tones that sit closer to an acoustic guitar than anything a traditional magnetic pickup can manage. You can run the two systems blended through the mono output, or split them to separate amps or inputs using the stereo output — the NanoMag going one direction, the ProBuckers going the other.
A USB output rounds out the connectivity options, letting you plug directly into a computer for recording without needing an external audio interface.
Hardware and Built-In Tuner
The bridge is an Epiphone LockTone Tune-o-matic with a LockTone Stopbar tailpiece — a setup that locks string ferrules in place for better sustain and easier string changes. Tuning stability comes from Wilkinson vintage-style machine heads with tombstone buttons at a 14:1 gear ratio.
One genuinely clever feature: a full-function chromatic LED tuner is built directly into the bridge pickup mounting ring. Hit the on/off switch and your output mutes automatically so you can tune silently mid-set. Eleven color-coded LEDs tell you the note, whether you're sharp or flat, and when you're locked in. It's a small thing that becomes a big deal when you're on stage.
