Cole Clark guitars come out of Melbourne, Australia, and they've built a reputation for doing things differently — sustainably sourced native timbers, a Spanish heel neck construction you won't find on most mainstream acoustics, and an internally carved top and back that sets them apart structurally from nearly everything else on the market. This AN1-BM is the pure acoustic version: no pickup, no cutaway, no electronics. Just the guitar and its voice.
This Cole Clark Angel 1 AN1-BM is in Very Good condition. The guitar is fully functional and has been well preserved, with normal cosmetic wear: It has an indent on the back of neck, the sides of guitar, some wear around sound hole, and white marks on top of headstock. Please review the photos carefully, as they provide the best representation of the instrument's overall condition.
The "BM" in the model code stands for Bunya/Maple — a Bunya pine top paired with Queensland Maple back, sides, and neck. Both are Australian native timbers, and neither behaves quite like the tonewoods you'd find on a typical American or Japanese-made guitar. That's very much the point. The AN1 is the entry point to the Angel series, meaning it has all the hallmarks of Cole Clark construction without cutaway or electronics adding to the price — making this used example a genuinely interesting option for players who want something built and sounding unlike anything else in this price range.
Bunya and Queensland Maple: A Different Kind of Tone
Bunya pine is a native Australian conifer prized by Cole Clark for its tonal characteristics. It sits in a tonal space that's often described as warm but articulate — responsive across dynamics, with a clarity that works well for both strumming and fingerpicking. The naturally satin nitrocellulose finish means the top is left to breathe and resonate rather than being sealed under thick lacquer.
Queensland Maple on the back and sides is not related to North American hard maple. It's a neutral, relatively fast-responding timber with a touch more snap and clarity than mahogany. The combination of Bunya and Queensland Maple has a balanced, open quality — not bass-heavy, not overly bright, but alive and even across registers. Players who play with nuance tend to find this guitar rewarding.
How Cole Clark Builds Differently
Cole Clark uses a Spanish heel (also called integral neck construction), which means the neck is joined to the body at the soundhole rather than being bolted or dovetailed on after the body is assembled. This isn't just a historical curiosity — it's a structural approach that Cole Clark believes contributes meaningfully to the way the guitar transmits vibration and responds to the player.
The top and back on this guitar are also internally carved — CNC-machined to vary in thickness across the surface — rather than simply braced in the traditional sense. The result is a top and back that are lighter and more responsive in key areas, with a ridge system joining the sides instead of conventional kerfing. It's a modern interpretation of acoustic construction that you'll recognize if you've played a Cole Clark before, and notice immediately if you haven't.
Additional hardware details confirmed for this model include a She Oak fretboard and bridge, Grover tuning machines, Graph Tech TUSQ nut and saddle, and dot inlays. The nut width is 44mm (approximately 1.73"), and the scale length is 25.5". All timbers used in Cole Clark construction are sustainably sourced.
