A Vintage-Inspired Hollowbody With Serious Character
Some guitars are easy to walk past. The Hagstrom '67 Viking II is not one of them. That cherry transparent finish over a flamed maple body, the bound F-holes, the gold trapeze tailpiece — it's the kind of instrument that makes people stop and ask questions. But the looks are really just the opening act. Once you plug in, the pair of H-52 Alnico V mini humbuckers do the real talking, and they've got a lot to say.
This Hagstrom '67 Viking II is in Very Good condition. The guitar is fully functional and will go through a full tech set up prior to shipping. It has a play wear, fine finish scratches from play noted. Please review the photos carefully for full condition.
The Viking II reissue is Hagstrom's loving recreation of the original 1967 model — a guitar that had a surprisingly brief original production run of just 14 years. If you're looking for a full hollowbody that covers everything from jangly clean tones to warm jazz chords to coil-split brightness, this is a guitar worth taking seriously.
A Body Built for Tone and Looks
The body of the Viking II is constructed from 5-ply Canadian flame maple, built as a true full hollowbody with a double-cutaway silhouette. Multi-ply binding runs along the body edges and the bound F-holes, giving the whole instrument a dressed-up look that holds up under stage lights. The gloss finish lets the cherry transparent color breathe through the flame of the maple beneath it — a combination that rewards a closer look every time.
Because it's a true hollowbody (not a center-block semi-hollow), the Viking II has an open, airy acoustic resonance that players who love archtop-style guitars will recognize right away. Notes have a natural warmth and a quick bloom to them, even when played unplugged.
The Neck, Fretboard, and Hagstrom's Famous "Fast" Feel
Hagstrom built their reputation in part on thin, fast necks, and the Viking II delivers exactly that. The bolt-on Canadian hard maple neck features the brand's proprietary H-Expander alloy truss rod — a design that runs the full length of the neck and provides tension at both ends, contributing to both stability and Hagstrom's characteristic sustain. The neck profile is notably slim and the action sits low without fighting you.
The fretboard is Hagstrom's Resinator material — a dense, uniform wood composite that behaves more consistently than standard fingerboard woods. It eliminates the dead spots that can sometimes show up on conventional boards, and players often describe it as feeling similar to high-quality ebony. The 15" fretboard radius keeps bends comfortable across 22 medium-jumbo frets, and pearloid block inlays mark the positions in vintage style. Scale length is 24.56" with a Graph Tech Black TUSQ XL nut at 42mm.
Pickups, Controls, and Hardware
The two Hagstrom H-52 mini humbuckers are the sonic engine here. Smaller coils than a traditional full-size humbucker means a tighter, brighter fundamental — but the Alnico V magnets keep things from going thin. The result lands somewhere between the warmth of a full 'bucker and the cut of a single coil. Push-pull pots on both tone controls add coil-splitting to the mix, so you can access genuine single-coil tones without swapping guitars.
A 3-way toggle pickup selector works alongside the standard two-volume, two-tone layout. Hardware throughout is gold finish — the long-throw Tune-O-Matic bridge sits on a wood block (which transfers string vibration more directly into the hollow body), and the trapeze tailpiece completes the vintage aesthetic. Hagstrom 18:1 ratio die-cast tuners handle tuning stability. The nut is Graph Tech Black TUSQ XL.
