This 2021 Gibson Les Paul Standard 60s in Ebony with nickel hardware is exactly that guitar: a no-nonsense, workhorse Les Paul that happens to look fantastic doing it.
The Standard 60s is Gibson's take on the early-'60s Les Paul recipe — the era right before the guitar world went wild for them. That means a solid mahogany body with a plain maple top, a slim-feeling neck profile, and a pair of 60s Burstbucker pickups that lean into the character of those original PAF-style humbuckers. It's a guitar that rewards players who actually want to dig in and play, rather than one that sits behind glass.

Mahogany and Maple — The Classic Formula
The body is solid mahogany with a plain maple cap — no weight relief routing, which Gibson confirmed on this model. That combination is why Les Pauls sound the way they do: mahogany brings warmth and midrange punch, while the maple top adds a bit of bite and upper-harmonic detail. It's a pairing that's been working since the late '50s, and Gibson hasn't messed with it here.
The finish is gloss nitrocellulose lacquer in Ebony — a classic solid black that shows off the body contours cleanly. Nitro is a thinner finish than polyurethane, which players often feel allows the wood to resonate a bit more freely as it ages. Whether or not you buy into that, it does give the guitar a more vintage-correct look and feel.
The 60s SlimTaper Neck
The mahogany neck runs a 60s-style SlimTaper profile — noticeably slimmer front-to-back than the chunkier '50s round profile found on the Standard 50s. Players who come from Strats and Teles often find the SlimTaper a much more comfortable transition into Les Paul territory. The set neck joint means the neck is glued in, contributing to the guitar's well-known sustain characteristics.
Up top, the Indian rosewood fingerboard has a 12" radius — flatter than vintage specs, which helps with bending and playing up the neck. The 22 medium jumbo frets give you good note definition without feeling overly large. The Graph Tech nut keeps string movement smooth at the headstock, working in tandem with the Grover Rotomatic Kidney tuners to hold pitch reliably. Nut width comes in at 1.695" (43.05mm), and scale length is the standard Gibson 24.75".
60s Burstbucker Pickups and Hand-Wired Controls
The two 60s Burstbucker pickups are Gibson's nod to the original Patent Applied For humbuckers — wound with Alnico 5 magnets, with the neck and bridge units (61R and 61T respectively) wound slightly differently from each other, mimicking the slight inconsistency of the originals. The result is a pickup set that's open and dynamic, responsive to how hard you pick and where you roll the volume knob.
The controls are hand-wired — two volume pots and two tone pots on individual audio taper potentiometers, with Orange Drop capacitors on the tone controls. The 3-way toggle lets you select either pickup individually or blend both together. Nickel hardware throughout, including the classic ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece — a simple, proven setup that transfers string vibration directly into the body.
