One of the Last Les Pauls Made in Kalamazoo
There's a certain weight — literally and figuratively — to picking up a guitar that was born at the end of an era. The 1984 Gibson Les Paul 30th Anniversary Goldtop was built at Gibson's historic Kalamazoo, Michigan plant, which closed its doors that same year after more than 80 years of production. Every one of these guitars carries that history with it. This isn't just a vintage Les Paul — it's a farewell note from Kalamazoo.
Gibson introduced the 30th Anniversary Goldtop in 1982 to mark three decades since the original 1952 Les Paul debut. Rather than recreate that first goldtop exactly, Gibson based this model on the beloved 1958 specs — the version with twin humbuckers — and loaded it with Tim Shaw's then-new PAF reissue pickups, one of Gibson's earliest serious attempts at recapturing the original Patent Applied For humbucker sound. It was a guitar built to look backward and forward at the same time.
Serial number B01030. This is a used example from our inventory — pictures are of the actual guitar you'll receive. Condition details are noted below.
Body and Construction
The 30th Anniversary Goldtop is built on a solid mahogany body with a carved maple cap finished in the classic gold over the top, with single-ply cream binding around the body edges. The construction follows the 1958 reissue spec closely: solid mahogany back, carved maple front, and a set-in neck joint. This is a substantial guitar — a true full-weight, non-chambered Les Paul from the Kalamazoo era.
The hardware is nickel-plated throughout, keeping with the vintage character of the instrument. The ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge pairs with a separate stop tailpiece — the configuration most associated with the golden age of the Les Paul Standard.
Neck, Fretboard, and Feel
The neck is one-piece mahogany with a set-in joint, topped with a bound rosewood fingerboard. Scale length is the standard Gibson 24.75 inches, nut width is 1-11/16 inches, and the fingerboard radius is 12 inches — a slightly flatter feel than many modern guitars. Twenty-two frets are fitted with pearl trapezoid inlays, and the 19th fret carries the "30th Anniversary" commemorative engraving that makes this model immediately identifiable.
The Kluson-style double-ring tuners are period-correct for this build. As with any vintage instrument, fret wear and neck condition should be assessed from the photos — our team can answer questions about the specific unit before you commit.
Tim Shaw Pickups — The Hidden Story
The pickups in this guitar are a genuine piece of Gibson history. Gibson engineer Tim Shaw developed these PAF reissue humbuckers in the early 1980s as one of the company's first dedicated efforts to reproduce the original late-1950s Patent Applied For humbucker design and construction. Players and collectors often regard the Tim Shaw pickups as a high point of early Gibson reissue electronics — a thoughtful attempt to reconnect with what made those original PAF-equipped guitars so compelling. Two of them sit here in the neck and bridge positions, wired to the standard four-knob, three-way-switch Les Paul control layout.
