The 1974 Fender Telecaster Custom sits at one of the more interesting crossroads in Fender's history — a classic Telecaster body and bridge pickup paired with a Seth Lover-designed Wide Range humbucker at the neck. Lover, the same engineer behind Gibson's original humbucking pickup, brought that same philosophy to Fender in the early '70s, and the result was a guitar that could go from classic Tele snap and twang to something noticeably thicker and fuller without ever feeling like it was fighting itself.

The guitar was part of Fender's 1972 redesign of the Telecaster Custom, which updated the model by dropping the body binding, adding the Wide Range humbucker at the neck, and switching to the three-bolt Microtilt neck joint. It stayed in production until 1981, and the 1974 examples like this one are right in the heart of that run. Serial number 521667 dates this guitar to 1974.
The Wide Range Humbucker — Seth Lover's Fender Creation
The defining feature of the Telecaster Custom's 1972 redesign is the Wide Range humbucker at the neck position. Seth Lover, who also designed Gibson's legendary PAF humbuckers, developed this pickup specifically for Fender. Unlike a standard humbucker, it was engineered to retain clarity and string definition while still providing the hum-canceling and added warmth a neck humbucker brings.
Paired with the traditional Telecaster single-coil at the bridge, you get a genuinely wide tonal range on one guitar. The bridge pickup delivers the familiar Tele snap and bite, while the neck humbucker adds body and warmth. The middle position — with both pickups engaged — is where players often find the most interesting combinations. The four-knob control layout (separate volume and tone for each pickup) lets you blend and balance the two very different pickups on the fly.
Construction and Feel
The neck is maple with a bullet-style truss rod and the three-bolt Microtilt neck joint that Fender introduced alongside the redesigned Custom. The 25.5" scale length is standard Telecaster, and the fretboard is maple or rosewood — a choice Fender offered on 1970s Customs. The toggle-style pickup selector switch is mounted on the upper bout, covered by the large black pickguard that's one of the Custom's most recognizable visual features.
The body is solid construction with a gloss finish, and this example wears the Black custom color. It's a finish Fender offered as an option on the Custom from its early production years. The three-bolt neck joint with Microtilt adjustment was a CBS-era feature that allowed neck angle adjustment without shimming — a practical if sometimes debated design choice of the period.
A Genuinely Versatile Vintage Tele
