A Piece of Fender History in Your Hands
Some guitars are just instruments. Others are time capsules. This 1966 Fender Duo-Sonic II in Dakota Red is firmly in the second camp — a genuine mid-'60s Fender built in Fullerton, California during one of the most storied eras in American guitar making. The checking, the chips, the honest wear — all of it tells a story that no brand-new guitar can fake.

The Duo-Sonic II arrived in 1964 alongside the Mustang, sharing its body shape, 24" scale length, and fixed bridge while skipping the tremolo. By 1966, it was largely overshadowed by the Mustang's popularity — which means these have always flown a little under the radar. That's still true today, and it makes them one of the more accessible ways to own a real vintage Fender. If a shorter scale and an offset body appeal to you, this is worth a close look.
The Body and Feel
The Duo-Sonic II body is alder — the same tonewood Fender was using on Stratocasters of the same era — in an offset waist silhouette that splits the difference between the Jazzmaster and the Mustang. It's a compact, lightweight guitar that sits comfortably whether you're standing or seated. Dakota Red was one of only three color options Fender offered on the Duo-Sonic II (Red, White, and Blue), and it's the boldest of the three.
Nearly six decades of play have left their mark: finish checking is present across the body, along with chips and general age-related wear consistent with a guitar of this vintage. That kind of patina is part of what makes a vintage guitar feel lived-in rather than preserved behind glass. The body itself remains solid.
The Neck and Fretboard
The neck is a one-piece maple C profile with a rosewood fretboard and a 7.25" radius — the same comfortable vintage radius found on Stratocasters and Telecasters of the period. The 24" scale length (longer than the original Duo-Sonic's 22.5") keeps string tension in a comfortable range and makes this guitar surprisingly easy to play. Nut width is 1-5/8".
The frets are worn and will likely need a refret before long-term gigging use — our tech will assess this during the setup. Pearl dot inlays mark the positions on the rosewood board. The neck is a genuine vintage Fender piece and plays an important role in the guitar's character and collector interest.
Electronics and Hardware
The pickups are non-original replacements — this is confirmed and disclosed. The original Mustang-style dual-pickup switching configuration (on/off and in/out of phase per pickup) remains part of the circuit. The fixed, string-through body bridge is one of the Duo-Sonic II's most practical features: without a tremolo unit to destabilize things, these guitars are known for holding tune reliably. Hardware shows honest age-related wear consistent with the rest of the instrument.
The guitar comes with its original hardshell case — a genuinely nice thing to have with a vintage instrument of this age.
