A Hundred Years of Soprano, in Your Hands
Martin has been making soprano ukuleles since 1915, and the S1 Uke carries that tradition forward without a single unnecessary flourish. No flashy inlays, no gimmicks — just a compact, well-made instrument built entirely from solid genuine mahogany with a hand-rubbed finish that lets the wood breathe and develop with time.
If you've ever been surprised by how much sound comes out of a small ukulele, the S1 is the kind of instrument that explains it. The all-solid mahogany body gives it a warmer, fuller voice than you'd expect from something this portable. It's the soprano that doesn't make you feel like you're sacrificing tone for convenience.
Whether you're picking up the ukulele for the first time or you're a seasoned player looking for a quality soprano to add to your collection, the S1 is a no-pretense, all-substance choice built by one of the most respected names in stringed instruments.
Solid Mahogany, Top to Bottom
The S1 Uke features a solid genuine mahogany top, back, and sides — not laminate, not a solid top over laminate back. All solid, all the way around. That construction matters: solid wood resonates more freely and tends to improve as it breaks in over time, which is something a plywood instrument simply won't do.
The dovetail mahogany neck joint provides a stable, traditional connection between neck and body. The hand-rubbed finish is thin by design, allowing the top to vibrate more naturally rather than being locked under a thick coat of lacquer.
Playable Details That Matter
The sipo fingerboard and bridge are smooth and fast under the fingers, and the 13.614" soprano scale length and 1 13/32" nut width give it a comfortable, traditional soprano feel. With 17 frets total, you have more range than many classic soprano designs. The multi-stripe rosette adds a clean, classic look without overdressing the instrument.
Intonation is dialed in with a compensated white TUSQ saddle and nut, and the traditional friction peg tuners stay true to the instrument's vintage-inspired design. Players who prefer geared tuners sometimes swap them out, but the friction pegs are part of what keeps this uke feeling authentic and lightweight.
