A Dreadnought Built the Way Trey Plays It
There's something refreshing about a guitar designed by someone who actually uses it on stage every night. Trey Hensley — two-time IBMA Guitar Player of the Year and GRAMMY winner — worked closely with Taylor to shape every detail of the Gold Label 510e around his demands as a flatpicker: power, clarity, and a neck you can dial in wherever you land. The result is the first square-shoulder dreadnought to join Taylor's Gold Label Collection, and it shows up ready to cut through a mix.
At the heart of it is a combination Trey chose himself: a torrefied Sitka spruce top over a solid mahogany body. Torrefied spruce has been heat-treated to mimic the acoustic behavior of well-aged wood, which means you get a more open, responsive sound right out of the box. Pair that with mahogany's natural warmth and midrange focus, and you have a tonewood duo that flatpickers and strummers have gravitated toward for decades — just refined with modern building methods.
If you're a player who cares about tradition but doesn't want to give up modern playability, the 510e gives you both without compromise. The deep dreadnought body projects with authority, while Taylor's neck and bracing work quietly behind the scenes to keep it controlled and comfortable.
The Torrefied Top and What It Means for You
Torrefied Sitka spruce isn't a marketing term — it's a real process. The wood is heat-treated to remove moisture and organic compounds, accelerating the aging that normally takes decades. The practical result is a top that opens up faster, vibrates more freely, and produces fuller low-end response than untreated spruce at the same age. Players often notice a looser, more resonant quality compared to a standard spruce guitar fresh off the shelf.
Inside the body, Taylor's fanned V-Class bracing (with a Tonal Rout) reinforces the top while enhancing sustain and focusing the fundamental tone of each note. The fan pattern allows different areas of the top to vibrate more independently, which contributes to both improved tuning accuracy and the kind of note separation that flatpickers depend on.
Neck, Fingerboard, and the Action Control System
The neck is neo-tropical mahogany shaped in Taylor's Standard Carve — a comfortable, medium profile that plays fast without feeling too slim. The nut width is 1.75 inches, which gives you a bit more room between strings than a narrower neck, a detail Trey specifically requested for his style of playing. The fingerboard is West African Crelicam ebony, with a 15-inch radius and Cream Crest inlays that nod to vintage acoustic aesthetics.
Taylor's Action Control Neck joint sets this guitar apart in a practical way: it uses a patented system that lets a tech adjust string action without a neck reset, just with a simple adjustment. For a working player who travels constantly and deals with seasonal humidity swings, that kind of built-in adjustability matters. The long-tenon joint also contributes to resonance and body coupling.
Electronics and Finish Details
Plugging in, the Gold Label 510e uses Trey's preferred LR Baggs Anthem SL system. The Anthem SL combines an under-saddle Element piezo pickup with a TRU·MIC condenser microphone and an end-pin preamp. The microphone captures the guitar's actual acoustic voice in the room, while the piezo handles the punch and low-end presence — blending the two gives you a stage-ready tone that sounds more like the real instrument than most undersaddle-only systems.
Cosmetically, Taylor went with an antique blonde treatment on the torrefied top — the natural golden-brown hue of heat-treated spruce suits the vintage character of the guitar well. Cream-colored binding with black/white/black purfling, a single-ring cream rosette, a double-layer ivoroid and faux-tortoise pickguard, a Honduran rosewood Curve Wing bridge, and nickel tuners round out the look. Full-body gloss finish throughout.
