Old-School Resonator Tone, Ready to Cut Through the Mix

There's a reason the square-neck resonator has been the go-to for bluegrass and lap-style slide players for over a century — that focused, punchy voice that slices right through a full band without needing any amplification. The Recording King RR-36S-VS Maxwell puts all of that tradition into a well-built, playable instrument finished in a classic gloss Vintage Sunburst.

Square-neck resonators like the Maxwell are purpose-built for lap-style playing. The squared neck profile isn't just cosmetic — it's what allows you to rest the guitar flat on your lap and get the proper clearance for a steel or glass slide, which is how this style has always been played. If you're coming to the resonator world from the bluegrass side, or you've been eyeing one from across the bluegrass jam for a while, this is a solid place to land.

From the cone to the bridge to the soundwell design, Recording King put genuine thought into what makes a resonator actually sound like a resonator.

The Heart of the Tone: Cone, Bridge, and Soundwell

The Maxwell is built around a hand-spun European Recording King resonator cone and a true sand-cast spider bridge. These two components are central to a resonator's voice — the cone amplifies string vibration mechanically, while the spider bridge transfers that energy across the cone's surface. Sand-cast spider bridges are notably rigid and consistent, helping deliver crisp, clear note separation with controlled sustain.

Surrounding those components is a parallelogram soundwell — the internal structure that directs and focuses sound through the cone. Together, these elements produce the crisp, punchy attack and minimal overtones that bluegrass players rely on to be heard in an ensemble. You get projection and clarity without muddiness.

All-Mahogany Construction

The body — top, back, and sides — is mahogany, giving the Maxwell a warmer, slightly darker tonal character than you'd get from a brass or steel-body resonator. Mahogany naturally produces a focused midrange with smooth note separation, which works especially well for the clean, articulate lines of bluegrass slide playing. The square-shouldered body silhouette is classic resonator styling, built to project.

The mahogany square neck is joined with a dovetail joint and fitted with a padauk fretboard — padauk is a reddish hardwood with tonal qualities similar to rosewood, offering a smooth playing surface with good definition. Scale length is 25.5" with 19 total frets (12 clear of the body) and a 1-15/16" bone nut. The bone nut contributes to sustain and clean string break angle.

Traditional Appointments and Vintage Sunburst Finish

The Maxwell keeps the aesthetics classic: ivory body binding with multi-ply top purfling, dot fingerboard inlays with ivory fingerboard binding, an ebony and maple saddle combination on the sand-cast spider bridge, and open-gear tuners with black buttons. The gloss Vintage Sunburst finish is warm and traditional — it looks exactly like a resonator should.

Whether you're stepping into your first resonator or adding a dedicated square-neck to your collection, the RR-36S-VS is a well-specified instrument with the hardware and construction to back it up.
