The Space Echo, No Tape Required
The Roland RE-201 Space Echo is one of those pieces of gear with a genuinely mythical reputation — warm, rhythmic, slightly unpredictable, and responsible for sounds you've heard on records spanning dub, post-punk, ambient, and everything in between. Owning an original means dealing with aging tape, motor maintenance, and a unit the size of a small appliance. The Boss RE-202 skips all of that.
Built by the same company that designed the original RE-201, the RE-202 puts that complete Space Echo experience into a pedalboard-sized enclosure. Boss engineers analyzed multiple vintage RE-201 units — including a pristine original from the Boss and Roland factory archive — and rebuilt everything from scratch with new algorithms, modeling the tape path, record/playback mechanism, motor variations, preamp coloration, tape age, and spring reverb character.
If you've ever wanted a Space Echo in your setup but thought it wasn't practical, this is the answer.
Twelve Echo Combinations, One Rotary Switch
The original RE-201's three-head configuration gave it 11 distinct echo combinations — single heads, paired heads, all three together — and that full set is here. Boss added a fourth virtual tape head to the RE-202, unlocking a 12th combination and opening up echo patterns that were simply impossible on the original hardware. The iconic 12-position Mode Selector controls all of it, just like it did on the RE-201.
Beyond echo, you get independent reverb — spring reverb faithfully modeled from the RE-201, plus hall, plate, room, and ambience types for additional options. Echo and reverb can run simultaneously on any mode. A two-band Bass/Treble EQ shapes the repeats, while the Saturation knob dials in tape-like compression and preamp coloration. The Wow & Flutter knob adds varying amounts of the pitch modulation artifacts that are part of what made the original so alive-sounding. A Tape button instantly switches between New and Aged tape simulations — the aged setting rolls off a bit of high end for a darker, more worn-in character.
Performance Controls That Go Beyond the Original
Three dedicated footswitches handle bypass, memory recall, and tap tempo — a feature impossible on the original tape machine. Warp and Twist effects are accessible from the footswitches during performance: Warp pushes feedback into near-infinite repeats, while Twist ramps up motor speed and feedback simultaneously for swirling, pitch-rising chaos. Both return to normal when you release the switch.
For expression control, the CTL/Exp jack accepts an expression pedal for real-time manipulation of virtually any parameter — or multiple parameters at once. You can also connect external footswitches for hands-free operation. The dry signal can be muted independently, which is useful for parallel effects rigs and studio insert use. Guitar/Line input switching provides the headroom needed for keyboards and line-level sources.
Presets, MIDI, and Modern Connectivity
Four onboard memory slots store your favorite settings for instant recall during a set. Via MIDI, that number expands to 127 presets accessible by program change. The RE-202 also supports MIDI Clock sync for locking tap tempo to an external source, and delay carryover is selectable when switching between memories so your repeats don't cut off abruptly.
Connections include stereo inputs and outputs (A/Mono and B jacks), MIDI In and Out via stereo mini-phone jacks, a CTL/Exp input, and a USB Micro-B port for firmware updates. Power is supplied by the included AC adapter — the RE-202 requires AC power and does not operate on batteries. Current draw is 140 mA.
