A Dreadnought With Some Old Soul

There's something about a slope-shoulder dreadnought that just feels right — a little more relaxed in the upper bout, a neck that joins at the 12th fret, and a voice that tends to reward nuance as much as it rewards power. Alvarez-Yairi's DYMR70 takes that classic recipe and builds it the way it was meant to be built: by hand, in Kani, Japan, by a small team of luthiers who have been at this craft for generations.

The DYMR70 is part of the Yairi Masterworks series, and the materials chosen for it reflect that pedigree. A solid AAA Sitka spruce top sits over solid East Indian rosewood back and sides — a combination that has defined the sound of steel-string acoustic guitars for well over a century. Every neck on a Yairi is spoke-shaved by hand, and every top is tuned before the guitar ships. That kind of attention shows up when you play it.

Whether you're a dedicated fingerpicker, a strummer who plays with dynamics, or someone who does a little of both, the DYMR70 is designed to respond to what you give it. It's a serious instrument for players who take their tone seriously.

All-Solid Construction, Built to Last

The DYMR70 is fully solid wood from top to back and sides — no laminate anywhere. The solid AAA Sitka spruce top provides clarity, volume, and strong projection, while the solid East Indian rosewood back and sides bring rolling lows, a punchy midrange, and defined treble response. Together they deliver the kind of tonal balance that only gets better as the guitar opens up over time.

Alvarez-Yairi tonewoods are naturally seasoned for five to fifteen years in the climate-controlled environment of the Kani factory. That extended seasoning results in a lighter, more resonant instrument that is dimensionally stable for decades of playing. The woods are carefully selected and curated — this is not a production-line guitar.

The gloss sunburst finish adds a visual warmth that suits the instrument well, and ivoroid binding frames the body cleanly. It's a handsome guitar that wears its quality without shouting about it.

FST6 Bracing and the 12th-Fret Neck Join

Alvarez's FST6 bracing system uses forward-shifted, scalloped braces that allow the top to vibrate more freely than a traditional X-brace pattern. The result is enhanced richness and clarity across the full frequency range — crispness up top, a focused and punchy low end, and a well-defined midrange in between. Players who pick mellow single-note lines and those who dig in hard with a flat pick both benefit from what FST6 bracing brings to the table.

The slope-shoulder body shape means the neck joins the body at the 12th fret, which slightly reduces string tension compared to a 14th-fret join. Paired with the 1-3/4" nut width and the extended dovetail neck joint, this makes the DYMR70 particularly well-suited to fingerpicking — there's plenty of string spacing and a wonderful response to a lighter touch, but it handles big open chords with equal authority.

Premium Hardware and Playability Details

The mahogany neck is shaped into a comfortable soft-V to C profile, spoke-shaved and hand-sanded by a Yairi craftsman. The 20-fret ebony fingerboard is smooth and durable, and the scale length sits at 25-1/2" — a standard feel that most acoustic players will find immediately comfortable. The nut and saddle are real bone, which contributes to both intonation accuracy and open-string resonance.

Gotoh 510 tuners with gold finish and ebony buttons handle tuning stability elegantly and add a refined look that complements the sunburst finish. The ebony direct-coupled bridge maximizes energy transfer between the strings and the top, boosting projection and dynamic sensitivity. Abalone and mother-of-pearl inlays, including a 12th-fret abalone inlay, complete the visual details.
