A Jumbo Body That Fills the Room
The PJ50E is built around a jumbo body shape — one of the largest standard acoustic body sizes — which translates directly to more volume and a wider, more expansive sound. The spruce top delivers the tonal clarity and projection that spruce is known for, while the meranti back and sides contribute warmth and a balanced tonal character. It's a wood combination that keeps things lively without getting harsh.
The open-pore finish treatment on both the top and the back and sides isn't just cosmetic. By skipping the thick polyurethane buildup of a traditional gloss finish, the body is freer to vibrate, which many players feel contributes to a more natural, resonant acoustic tone. You'll also notice how comfortable it is to play — the back of the neck has that same open-pore feel, so your hand glides instead of sticking.
Plug In and Play
The PJ50E comes fitted with an Ibanez undersaddle pickup feeding the onboard AEQ-2T preamp. The AEQ-2T gives you two-band EQ (bass and treble) to shape your amplified tone, and the built-in chromatic tuner works even when the guitar isn't plugged in — a genuinely useful feature when you're doing a quick tune between songs. Output is via a standard 1/4" jack, powered by a single 9V battery.
Chrome die-cast tuning machines with a 15:1 gear ratio handle the tuning duties on the headstock. They're not boutique tuners, but they're stable and precise enough for regular gigging and practicing. The Ibanez Advantage bridge pins are a small but appreciated detail — their bulb-shaped design makes swapping strings considerably less frustrating than wrestling with traditional pins.
Neck and Playability
The PJ50E's neck is built from meranti and shaped in Ibanez's PJ profile — a comfortable, mid-depth shape that works well for acoustic playing. The nut width comes in at 42mm (about 1.65"), which is on the slimmer side for an acoustic and will feel familiar to players who spend time on electric guitars. The 10" fretboard radius and nandu wood fingerboard run 20 frets over a 25.5" scale length.
The nandu wood bridge and fingerboard are less well-known materials, but they've been used by Ibanez consistently throughout the PF Performance line. Players generally find them comfortable to play and durable over time. White dot inlays keep navigation clean and simple.
