A Fresh Take on the Auditorium — Rethought from the Ground Up
Sometimes a guitar surprises you not because it looks different, but because it sounds different the moment you strum it. The Ibanez AAM50CE is that kind of guitar. Built around Ibanez's own Advanced Auditorium body — a shape engineered with a slightly wider waist positioned closer to the neck — it delivers a richer low-mid response that standard auditorium designs often leave on the table. Add in a solid Sitka spruce top, an X-M bracing pattern developed over two-plus years of prototyping, and an Open Pore Natural finish that lets the wood breathe, and you have a guitar that's been genuinely thought through.
The AAM50CE also comes ready to plug in, with Ibanez's AEQ-TP2 preamp and T-bar undersaddle pickup mounted neatly on the upper bout — out of the way when you don't need it, right at hand when you do. The built-in chromatic tuner is easy to read on a dark stage, and the 2-band EQ gives you enough shaping to stay natural or cut through a mix.
Whether you're playing at a café, working through originals in a practice room, or looking for a cutaway acoustic-electric that won't fight you up the neck, the AAM50CE is worth a serious look.
Solid Top, Distinctive Tonewoods
The solid Sitka spruce top is the workhorse of acoustic guitar tops for a reason — it handles a wide dynamic range, stays articulate at low volumes, and opens up as it's played in. Ibanez pairs it here with sapele back and sides, a wood that brings warm mids and a bright, responsive character to the mix. The combination gives the AAM50CE a full, balanced voice without any muddiness.
What really sets the tonewood story apart here is the Purpleheart fretboard and bridge. Purpleheart is a dense, hard tropical hardwood with a naturally striking purple-brown grain. It contributes a focused, articulate feel underhand, and the matching Purpleheart bridge transfers string vibration directly into the body for a natural, resonant tone transfer. It's an unconventional choice, but a well-considered one.
X-M Bracing and the Advanced Auditorium Body
The body shape isn't just a marketing term. Ibanez went through multiple rounds of prototyping to land on the Advanced Auditorium's wider waist profile, which improves body-to-weight balance and coaxes more low-mid resonance out of the design compared to a conventional auditorium. The A.I.R.port secondary soundhole on the upper bout adds another dimension — it bounces sound toward the player so you can hear yourself more clearly when playing acoustically, which is genuinely useful in a rehearsal or session setting.
The X-M bracing pattern underneath the top was developed specifically for this body shape. Unlike a standard X-brace, the X-M adds tone braces and finger braces that work together to transmit string energy efficiently across the top. The result is a wider dynamic range and cleaner note separation, particularly noticeable when playing fingerstyle or mixed picking patterns.
The Advanced Access Cutaway and Electronics
The cutaway on the AAM50CE isn't a shallow gesture — Ibanez calls it an "Advanced Access Cutaway," with a deep, straight profile that gives clean access from the 18th fret on up. The shaved side on the cutaway bout further reduces any blockage at the upper register. If you do a lot of work up the neck, you'll notice the difference.
The onboard electronics are built around the Ibanez AEQ-TP2 preamp, located on the upper bout for easy reach without interrupting playing position. It features a 2-band EQ and a built-in digital tuner. The T-bar undersaddle pickup captures the guitar's acoustic character faithfully, and the output includes both a standard 1/4" and balanced XLR jack for flexibility when connecting to a PA or interface. The tapered headstock design reduces weight and ensures straight string pull from tuner to nut, which contributes to stable tuning and less stress on the neck.
