Nylon Tone, Modern Feel — The Yamaha NTX1 Acoustic-Electric
There's a certain magic in nylon strings that steel just can't replicate — a warmth and expressiveness that suits everything from classical repertoire to bossa nova fingerpicking to late-night jazz. The problem, traditionally, has been the guitar that comes with it: wide nut, high action, big body, no pickup. Yamaha's NTX1 fixes all of that. It puts genuine nylon-string tone into a slim, cutaway thinline body with a neck profile that feels right at home to electric and steel-string players, plus a full onboard preamp system ready for the stage.
The NTX1 is part of Yamaha's NX Series — a lineup built specifically to bridge the gap between the classical world and modern performance. If you've always been curious about nylon strings but felt put off by traditional classical guitars, this is the one that makes that leap easy. And if you're already a nylon player looking to gig without hauling a microphone setup, the NTX1 has you covered there too.
In Natural finish, the guitar lets the solid Sitka spruce top do the talking — clean grain lines, warm amber tone, and a gloss finish that looks sharp under stage lights. The matte neck finish keeps things practical so your fretting hand moves freely without drag.
A Solid Top That Earns Its Place
The solid Sitka spruce top is the tonewood centerpiece of the NTX1. Sitka is a go-to choice for acoustic instruments because it's responsive across a wide dynamic range — it sings softly when you fingerpick gently and opens up with presence when you dig in. On a nylon-string guitar, where the tone tends toward warmth and roundness, the spruce top adds clarity and projection that keeps notes from getting muddy. Yamaha's luthiers also refined the NX bracing system specifically for this body shape, enhancing low-end resonance while drawing out the natural character of the tonewoods.
The back and sides are Nato, a hardwood that behaves tonally in the ballpark of mahogany — warm midrange, balanced response, and a natural figure that looks good without being flashy. It's a practical, reliable choice that complements the spruce top without fighting it. The bridge is a combination of Ebony and Walnut, and the nut and saddle are Urea — all confirmed Yamaha spec on this model.
A Neck Built for the Crossover Player
Here's where the NTX1 really sets itself apart from a traditional classical guitar. The nut width is 48mm (1-7/8") — noticeably narrower than the 52mm you'd find on a standard classical neck. That might sound like a small number, but it makes a significant difference in how the guitar feels in your hand, especially if you're coming from steel-string or electric. The modern neck profile puts comfortable space between your palm and fingers for chord work and lead lines without the wide-spread stretch that classical necks demand.
The fingerboard is genuine walnut with an ultra-flat 23-5/8" radius — nearly flat compared to most steel-string guitars, which is what nylon-string phrasing and legato technique calls for. Scale length is 650mm (25 9/16"), which is standard for classical guitars and sits in familiar territory for most players. The neck joins the body at the 14th fret, which, combined with the cutaway, gives you upper-fret access that a traditional classical body simply doesn't offer.
Stage-Ready Electronics
The NTX1's undersaddle pickup is powered by Yamaha's onboard preamp system — purpose-built for nylon strings, with a frequency response tuned to capture the full harmonic depth of nylon rather than sounding brittle or artificial. The onboard 3-band EQ (bass, mid, treble) with adjustable mid-frequency lets you shape your amplified tone from the guitar itself. An onboard tuner means one less pedal on your board. Strap buttons are included, so the NTX1 is gig-ready from the moment you take it out of the box — no modifications needed.
