One Pedal. A Million Units. Still Crushing It.

There are pedals people talk about, and then there's the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone — a pedal people can't stop arguing about. Since 1991, it's moved over a million units and planted itself firmly on the pedalboards of bedroom shredders, touring guitarists, and even a few artists you'd never expect to find running one. (Prince had one on his rig in the '90s. Wrap your head around that.)

At its core, the MT-2 is a high-gain distortion pedal with a dual-stage gain circuit and one of the most powerful onboard EQ sections you'll find in a compact stompbox. That combination gives you a lot more control over your sound than the simple knob layout might suggest — and that's really the key to getting the most out of it.

If you're after heavy rhythms, thick sustain on leads, or a flexible platform for sculpting extreme distortion tones across genres, the Metal Zone is worth a very close look.

Dual-Stage Gain: More Than Just Raw Volume

The MT-2's gain circuit runs two stages in series. The first stage emphasizes mid-focused clarity, which then feeds into the second stage's more aggressive character. The result is distortion that stays defined and articulate even at higher gain settings — not a wall of indistinguishable mush.

Seven carefully tuned pre- and post-distortion filter stages keep the tone tight and controlled at every setting. Players often find they get the best results by treating the Distortion knob as one piece of a larger puzzle rather than just cranking it and hoping for the best.

The EQ Section Is the Real Story

The 3-band active EQ is where the MT-2 earns its reputation for versatility. The High and Low knobs are shelving controls that provide up to 15 dB of cut or boost at 100 Hz and 10 kHz, respectively. That alone gives you a lot of range for matching the pedal to your guitar and amp.

But the standout feature is the semi-parametric midrange section. There are two controls: a Middle knob for boost or cut, and a Mid Freq knob that sweeps the center frequency anywhere from 200 Hz to 5 kHz. That's an unusually wide range — it functions almost as a global active EQ, letting you go from classic scooped-mid metal tones all the way to punchy, forward-sounding sounds that cut through dense mixes.

Practical Details Worth Knowing

The MT-2 runs on a single 9V battery or an optional Boss PSA-series AC adapter (sold separately). Current draw is 30 mA. Bypass is buffered, which is standard across the Boss compact lineup — the buffer keeps your signal intact when the pedal is disengaged.

The housing is the familiar Boss compact enclosure — road-tested in decades of live use. A battery access door lets you swap a 9V without pulling the pedal off your board, and the LED indicator doubles as a battery check.
