A Les Paul Custom Built for Players Who Actually Go All the Way Up the Neck

Most Les Paul Customs are statement guitars — the black-beauty look, the Chrome hardware, the multi-ply binding. This one makes all the same statements but adds something the classic doesn't: a contoured heel that lets you reach the 22nd fret without fighting the guitar for it. That's the whole Axcess idea, and it's genuinely one of the more player-smart things Gibson's Custom Shop has done.

Then there's the Blue Widow finish. Gibson's "Widow" series applies a bold, saturated color stain over a figured flame maple top, then carries that same tint into the binding — body, neck, and headstock appointments all match. On this one, that color is a deep, dark blue, which plays off the natural figuring in the maple in a way that shifts from rich midnight blue to something almost iridescent depending on the light. The mahogany back gets a complementary red stain, giving the whole guitar a dramatic depth underneath the gloss nitro.

This is a Made-to-Measure (M2M) build from the Gibson Custom Shop — a program that steps outside standard production to create guitars with specific finish, hardware, and wood combinations ordered to spec. If you've been waiting for a Les Paul Custom that actually fits your playing style as well as it looks on the wall, this is a strong contender.

The Axcess Platform: What It Actually Changes

The headline feature of the Axcess series is the contoured neck heel. Where a traditional Les Paul heel creates a block of mahogany that limits how comfortably your thumb-side hand can reach above the 15th fret, the Axcess carves that area away — smoothly contouring the neck joint at the 16th fret so your hand moves freely all the way up. A long neck tenon is still used, so the neck-to-body connection and resonance are retained; you're just not fighting the geometry anymore.

The body itself is slightly thinner than a standard Les Paul, and it incorporates both modern weight relief and a belly scarf — a contour carved into the back so the guitar seats more naturally against your ribcage. The result is a guitar that feels noticeably lighter and more ergonomic in the playing position, whether you're standing or sitting.

The Apex headstock is another Axcess-specific feature. It reinforces the headstock at a 14-degree angle (rather than the vintage 17-degree) for added strength, while the familiar Les Paul Custom headstock profile and pearl appointments are kept intact.

Mahogany, Maple, Ebony — The Tone Stack

The foundation is a solid mahogany body, which provides that characteristically warm, singing sustain that the Les Paul is known for. Over that sits a 2-piece figured maple cap — the specific piece for this M2M build is hand-selected, giving the Blue Widow finish something worthwhile to work with in terms of figuring. The maple adds clarity and articulation on top of the mahogany's warmth.

The neck is solid mahogany with a SlimTaper C profile, running a 24.75" scale into a bound ebony fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets at a 12" radius. The Corian nut measures 1.687" wide. Mother of pearl block inlays run the length of the board. Ebony is a dense, smooth wood that gives the fingerboard a fast, slightly slick feel — players who've spent time on a Les Paul Custom's ebony board tend to notice it immediately compared to rosewood or even bound maple.

490R, 498T, and the Push-Pull Split

The pickup pairing here is Gibson's 490R in the neck and 498T in the bridge — both 4-conductor humbuckers. The 490R is a balanced, articulate neck pickup that clears up beautifully with a rolled-back volume, while the 498T runs a bit hotter in the bridge and has the snarl and output that suits the Axcess platform's modern-player orientation well. These two together give you a wide range of classic humbucker tone from clean and warm to fully cranked and aggressive.

Both tone controls are push-pull pots (500K), which engage coil splitting. In split mode, you get a single-coil character that opens up the sound for cleaner, more chimey tones — notably without the hum, since Gibson's 4-conductor wiring handles the cancellation. It's a genuinely useful addition rather than a novelty. Hardware throughout is chrome, with Grover Keystone tuners and the traditional Tune-O-Matic bridge/stop bar tailpiece pairing.
