The Classic Gibson Small Body, Built for Real Playing
There's a reason the L-00 has been Gibson's go-to small-body acoustic since 1932. It's not the biggest guitar in the room, but it makes up for that with a focused, present voice that works beautifully in a room, in a recording session, or on a stage. The L-00 Special brings that same legacy to players looking for a USA-built Gibson acoustic that doesn't require a second mortgage.
Crafted by Gibson's acoustic luthiers in Bozeman, Montana, the L-00 Special is constructed using genuine solid mahogany back and sides and a solid Sitka spruce top with traditional scalloped X-bracing. That's a combination with serious pedigree, and it delivers the balanced, dry, punchy tone that the L-00 has always been known for — plenty of dynamic range in a compact, narrow-waisted body.
Whether you lean toward fingerstyle blues, solo arrangements, or singer-songwriter work where your guitar needs to sit cleanly in a mix, this guitar is well-suited to the task. And thanks to the onboard L.R. Baggs electronics, it's just as ready for the stage as it is for a quiet living room session.
A Body Shape with a Voice of Its Own
The narrower waist of the L-00 body shape produces a focused, nuanced sound with a leaner, tighter bass response compared to a full-size dreadnought. That's not a limitation — it's a feature. Players who find big-bodied guitars overwhelming, or who want a guitar that records without swamping out the midrange, often find the L-00's proportions are exactly right.
Single-ply binding runs along the top and back perimeter, and the satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish in Satin Natural lets the wood breathe while giving the guitar a clean, understated look. Nitrocellulose finishes are thinner than polyurethane, which can allow the top to vibrate more freely as the guitar ages in.
Neck Feel and Hardware
The neck is made of utile and features Gibson's SlimTaper profile — comfortable for players who prefer a faster, less chunky neck feel. It's attached to the body via a compound dovetail joint with hot hide glue, a traditional construction method Gibson uses across their acoustic line. The rosewood fretboard has a 12" radius, mother-of-pearl dot inlays, and 19 standard frets, with a nut width of 1.725".
The closed-slot rectangular rosewood bridge is fitted with a TUSQ saddle, and the nut and bridge pins are also TUSQ — a synthetic material that offers consistent tone transfer. Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners keep the guitar in tune without adding unnecessary bulk to the headstock.
Stage-Ready Electronics
The L-00 Special comes equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element Bronze active under-saddle piezo pickup and active preamp. Volume is controlled via a soundhole-mounted knob, keeping things simple and accessible mid-performance. It's a clean, reliable system that translates the guitar's acoustic character well without coloring the tone too heavily.
