The Workhorse Look, Epiphone Price
The Gibson J-45 has been called "The Workhorse" since 1942 — it's shown up on countless recordings, stages, and living room floors because it just works. The Epiphone J-45 Studio takes that same sloped-shoulder silhouette and makes it genuinely accessible, with a solid Sitka spruce top, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, and Fishman electronics all in one gloss Vintage Sunburst package.
This is the newer Studio Acoustic Collection version of the J-45 Studio — a significant reimagining of the model. If you've been looking for a round-shoulder acoustic that can pull double duty at home and on a small stage, this is the conversation to have.
A note before we go further: this model has been discontinued by Epiphone. Stock is limited to what's on hand. If you've had your eye on a Vintage Sunburst J-45-style acoustic at this price point, now's the time.
Solid Top, Sloped Shoulders
The J-45's body shape is one of the most recognizable in acoustic guitar history — that larger lower bout paired with a smaller, rounded upper bout creates a voice that's focused and full at the same time. The solid spruce top is the heart of it, giving you that touch-sensitive response that opens up as you play harder or softer.
The layered mahogany back and sides add warmth and body to the spruce's natural clarity. The result is a balanced tone that works whether you're finger-picking at home, strumming in a band setting, or recording a quick demo. Four-ply ivory and black binding on the top and single-ply ivory binding on the back round out the vintage-correct look.
Neck, Fretboard, and Feel
The mahogany neck uses a Rounded C profile — one of the most universally comfortable shapes out there. It's joined to the body with a glued-in tapered dovetail joint, which keeps things stable while transferring vibration efficiently from neck to body. The 24.75" scale length matches the original Gibson J-45, giving you slightly looser string tension than longer-scale acoustics and making bends and chord transitions a little easier on the fingers.
The rosewood fretboard is fitted with 20 standard frets and simple pearloid dot inlays. The belly-up rosewood bridge anchors the strings with ivory-colored bridge pins — a small detail that goes a long way toward nailing that classic aesthetic.
Fishman Electronics, Vintage Style
The J-45 Studio comes ready to plug in, with a Fishman S-Core under-saddle pickup paired with a Fishman Presys VT preamp. Volume and tone controls are mounted in the soundhole, where you can reach them easily mid-song without them drawing attention from the audience. It's a clean, practical system that doesn't get in the way acoustically or visually.
The vintage-style appointments extend to a teardrop-shaped dark tortoiseshell pickguard, three-on-a-plate tuners with ivory plastic buttons, and a 60s Kalamazoo-style headstock with the Epiphone logo in gold silkscreen. In Vintage Sunburst gloss finish, this guitar looks like it costs considerably more than it does.
