The Workhorse, Now With a Cutaway

There's a reason the J-45 earned the nickname "The Workhorse." Since 1942, its sloped-shoulder dreadnought body, warm mahogany voice, and no-nonsense playability have made it the go-to acoustic for players who need a guitar that works as hard as they do. The Epiphone Inspired by Gibson J-45 EC takes that foundation and adds one very useful upgrade: a cutaway that opens up the upper frets without sacrificing the body resonance that makes the J-45 shape so beloved.

All-solid construction throughout — solid Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides — means you're getting genuine tonal depth from the wood itself, not a laminate approximation. It's a meaningful distinction, especially at this price point, and one you'll notice both unplugged and through a PA.

Whether you're flatpicking folk tunes, fingerpicking a country ballad, or writing songs that'll outlast the moment, the J-45 EC is built to keep up. The cutaway lets you reach notes that the standard J-45 body keeps just out of grasp — a small change that opens up a lot of musical real estate.

All-Solid Tonewoods That Mean Business

The solid Sitka spruce top delivers the J-45's characteristic balance — enough brightness to cut through without thinning out the warm low-mid response that the sloped-shoulder body is known for. Sitka is one of the most responsive tonewoods for a reason: it reacts to everything from a light touch to a full-arm strum with clarity and dynamics.

The solid mahogany back and sides add the warmth and midrange punch that define the J-45 sound. Mahogany doesn't just color the tone — it shapes it, pushing forward the frequencies that make vocals and acoustic fingerpicking feel present and grounded. Unlike laminate construction, solid mahogany resonates freely and tends to open up and improve with play over time.

A Neck You'll Want to Spend Hours On

The mahogany neck features a rounded C profile — comfortable for most hand sizes and well-suited to both chord work and single-note runs. At 24.724 inches, the scale length sits in a sweet spot that keeps string tension approachable without going floppy. The 1.693-inch nut width gives you enough room for clean fingerpicking without feeling wide. The Indian laurel fingerboard offers a smooth playing surface with 20 medium jumbo frets and mother-of-pearl dot inlays.

The 60s-style Kalamazoo headstock is a nice nod to the guitar's heritage — understated but instantly recognizable to players who know their J-45 history.

Fishman Electronics, Stage-Ready Out of the Box

The Fishman Sonicore under-saddle pickup pairs with a Fishman Presys II preamp system — a more feature-rich setup than a simple volume/tone control. The Presys II gives you independent volume, bass, and treble controls, a phase switch for managing feedback on stage, and a built-in chromatic tuner with an LED display. That's a genuinely useful set of tools for live performance, all accessible without breaking out a separate pedal tuner or fiddling with EQ at the board. Powered by a 9-volt battery (not included).

4-ply ivory and black binding frames the top; the back gets a single-ply ivory binding. A tortoise-shell J-45-shaped pickguard and nickel-plated tuners round out the traditional appointments. The aged gloss finish gives the whole package a vintage look that's earned, not painted on.
