The Amp That Shows Up on Every Stage
If you've spent any time around working guitarists, you've seen a Hot Rod Deluxe sitting on stage — sometimes miked, sometimes not, always loud enough to cut through. The fourth generation of this workhorse brings the same proven formula with meaningful refinements that players had been asking for since the III.
The Hot Rod Deluxe IV is a 40-watt, all-tube 1x12" combo built around a pine cabinet, a Celestion A-Type speaker, and a modified preamp that Fender redesigned specifically to tighten up the overdrive response. Three selectable channels — Normal, Drive, and More Drive — cover a wide tonal range without ever requiring you to tap-dance across a pedalboard mid-set. And if you want to run your own drive chain, the effects loop keeps everything clean and quiet.
This is the amp for someone who needs a reliable, loud, pedal-friendly platform that can hold its own in a rehearsal room, a recording session, or a club gig without breaking your back getting it there.
All-Tube Power With a Redesigned Preamp
The Hot Rod Deluxe IV runs three 12AX7 preamp tubes and two 6L6 power tubes — an all-tube signal path that gives you real headroom and natural compression when you push it. The 6L6 pair is responsible for that wide-open, responsive clean sound the Hot Rod line is known for.
What's new in the IV is what Fender did to the preamp circuit. The modifications improve note definition and clarity in the Drive and More Drive channels, so overdriven notes stay articulate rather than smearing together. There's also a Bright switch that works as a high-pass filter across all three channels — useful for adding top-end sparkle to any setting without a separate EQ pedal.
The three-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) plus the Presence knob give you enough shaping range to adapt to different guitars, rooms, and playing styles without a lot of fuss. Players often find that boosting the midrange and rolling off the Bright switch opens up a surprisingly warm, compressed tone reminiscent of the vintage tweed amps this design is rooted in.
Spring Reverb and Effects Loop
The IV's spring reverb has been specifically updated from the III — smoother response, better depth across the dial, and less of the harshness that could creep in at higher reverb settings. You'll still get authentic spring character, just with more usable range between "a little air" and "full soak."
The onboard series effects loop lets you insert time-based effects — delay, reverb, modulation — after the preamp stage, which keeps them from interacting with the amp's gain structure. If you're running a pedalboard, this is a real convenience: your drives and overdrives go up front, your reverb and delay go in the loop, and the amp stays quiet and clean in between.
Pine Cabinet and Updated Aesthetics
One of the more consequential changes in the IV is the move back to a pine cabinet — the same wood Fender used in their 1950s and '60s amps. Pine is lighter than the MDF/plywood construction used in earlier Hot Rod generations, and it resonates differently with the speaker, contributing to a more open, musical sound. At 41 lbs., it's more manageable at a load-in than you might expect from a 40-watt tube amp.
The look is classic Hot Rod: black tolex, lightly-aged silver grille cloth, and ivory pointer (chicken head) knobs on the control panel. The steel-reinforced strap handle is a practical upgrade for anyone who's hauled an amp up a flight of stairs more than once.
