Designed in partnership with saxophonist Frederick L. Hemke, these reeds are built around a shorter vamp and a balanced, slightly thinner tip — a combination that produces a dark, rich tone with quick response. They're well-suited to traditional, round-chambered mouthpieces and work across both classical and traditional jazz playing styles.
What sets these apart from earlier Hemke reeds is the organic certification. The cane is USDA Certified Organic, with every stage — from cultivation through processing and manufacturing — following strict USDA guidelines. D'Addario also uses an innovative hot-water fumigation process and the cane itself as fertilizer, keeping the reeds free of added chemicals throughout production. Each reed is individually processed using D'Addario's proprietary blanking machinery for consistent playability out of the box. The packaging has also been updated to a paper reed holder, eliminating plastic waste from the traditional plastic holder.
