A Living Piece of Acoustic History
Some guitars earn their reputation over decades. The Martin HD-28 earned its over nearly a century. Pull one out of the case and you're holding the same fundamental design that shaped bluegrass, folk, country, and just about every corner of American roots music — but with the refinements Martin introduced in their refreshed 2025 Standard Series. The 1933 Ambertone finish adds a warm, graduated burst that deepens toward the edges of the spruce top, nodding to the pre-war Martins that started it all.
The "H" in HD-28 stands for herringbone — the bold decorative trim running around the top that's been a hallmark of Martin's finest dreadnoughts since the 1930s. But it's more than ornamental: the HD-28 also carries the forward-shifted scalloped X-bracing that sets it apart from the standard D-28, giving the top more freedom to move and the whole guitar more resonance and liveliness across the frequency range.
Whether you're a flatpicker chasing big open-chord projection, a fingerstyle player who needs articulate note separation, or a singer-songwriter who wants a guitar that fills a room without amplification — the HD-28 Ambertone is built to deliver.
Tonewood Construction: Solid Through and Through
The HD-28's voice starts with a solid Sitka spruce top — the same workhorse tonewood that has topped the world's most recorded acoustic guitars for generations. Sitka spruce offers a wide dynamic range and stiff, responsive grain that lets the top vibrate efficiently whether you're playing softly or digging in hard. The 1933 Ambertone gloss finish deepens toward the edges, giving the top a warm, aged character without hiding the wood grain beneath it.
Back and sides are solid East Indian rosewood, finished in gloss. Rosewood's dense structure delivers a rich, full-bodied low end and shimmering high-frequency detail — the combination that gives the HD-28 its signature breadth of tone. Martin's Golden Era forward-shifted scalloped X-bracing, with 5/16" Sitka spruce braces, allows the top to vibrate more freely across the lower bout, enhancing both resonance and projection compared to standard square-scalloped designs.
A Neck Built for Modern Hands
Martin's 2025 Standard Series update brought meaningful refinements to playability, and the neck is where you feel them most. The GE Modified Low Oval profile with High-Performance Taper gives you a comfortable, familiar feel — slightly flatter than a vintage C-profile but with just enough shoulder to feel substantial. The taper toward the body end makes the higher frets more accessible without sacrificing the full-bodied feel up at the nut.
The 25.4" scale runs across an ebony fingerboard with a 1-3/4" nut width. The fingerboard features abalone diamonds and squares in a long pattern — a classic Martin appointment that looks as good as it plays. A compensated bone saddle on the ebony GE Modern Belly bridge, paired with a bone nut, helps the HD-28 stay in tune across the full neck. Nickel open-gear tuners with butterbean knobs complete the vintage-inspired aesthetic at the headstock.
The Details That Make It an HD
Bold herringbone purfling wraps the top edge — the defining visual signature of the HD series and a reference to the pre-war models collectors prize. Antique white binding frames the body and adds contrast against the Ambertone finish. A faux tortoise shell pickguard and Style 28 multi-stripe rosette round out the appointments, keeping the aesthetic rooted in Martin tradition. The satin neck finish keeps your fretting hand moving freely without any sticky gloss drag.
