Big Koa Sound in a Go-Anywhere Package

There's a certain magic to picking up a guitar that fits everywhere — on the couch, in the back seat, at the campfire — and still sounds like a real instrument. The Taylor GS Mini-e Koa pulls that off without compromise. Its scaled-down Grand Symphony body is compact enough to take anywhere, but the solid Hawaiian koa top means you're not giving anything up on the tonal side of the equation.

Koa is one of those tonewoods that rewards patience. It starts out clear and focused, with a natural compression that smooths out your attack and adds a bit of shimmer up top. Players often find it sits somewhere between mahogany's warm punch and rosewood's complexity — direct and musical, with a brightness that doesn't tip into harsh. And the figured grain patterns don't hurt, either.

The built-in ES-B electronics make this an easy grab-and-go guitar for small gigs, living room sessions, or recording — wherever you happen to be playing next.

A Solid Top That Earns Its Place

Taylor builds every GS Mini with a solid wood top, and the GS Mini-e Koa is no different. The solid Hawaiian koa top is the acoustic engine here — responsible for projection, clarity, and the tonal character that improves with play time. Koa tops are known for their natural compression, which gives notes a pleasing "roll-in" quality and a focused, balanced response whether you're strumming open chords or picking single notes.

The layered koa back and sides add visual cohesion while providing a practical benefit: layered wood construction is significantly more stable in changing temperatures and humidity, making it the smart choice for a guitar that travels. Guitar Center notes that the arched back is designed to generate more sound projection from the compact body — a clever engineering detail that punches above the GS Mini's small frame.

Playability That Gets Out of Your Way

Taylor's patented neck design has been refined since 1999, and the GS Mini-e Koa benefits from that legacy. The 1-11/16" nut width and slender profile keep fretting comfortable across hand sizes, while the shorter 23.5" scale length lowers string tension enough to make chord shapes and bending noticeably easier without feeling loose or unstable. Taylor describes it as "a smooth, slinky handfeel" — and that's accurate without being an overstatement.

The Sapele neck is capped with a West African Crelicam Ebony fretboard — a dense, smooth tonewood that wears well and gives your fretting hand a crisp, responsive surface to work on. Twenty frets, 4mm dot inlays, and a Nubone nut complete a setup that's clean, practical, and easy to play right out of the box.

ES-B Electronics: Simple, Effective, Ready When You Are

The Taylor ES-B pickup system is the practical choice for a travel-sized acoustic-electric. It incorporates Taylor's Expression System 2 piezo design and pairs it with an onboard preamp that includes tone and volume controls plus a built-in digital chromatic tuner with an LED display. The low battery indicator is a small but genuinely useful detail — you won't get caught mid-set without warning.

The preamp is powered by two CR2032 lithium button cells, rated for approximately 300 hours of use. Whether you're running into a PA, an acoustic amp, or a recording interface, the ES-B delivers a clear, natural amplified tone that stays true to the guitar's acoustic character.
