The Room Comes With You

You know that feeling when you start playing in a great-sounding room — a church, a studio live room, a tiled bathroom at 2am — and suddenly everything sounds better, so you keep playing longer? Yamaha decided to bottle that experience and put it inside a guitar. That's the FS-TA TransAcoustic in a nutshell: a concert-body acoustic-electric with built-in reverb and chorus that actually resonates from inside the instrument itself. No amp, no pedalboard, no interface. Just you and the guitar.

At the heart of the FS-TA is an integrated actuator mounted on the inner surface of the back. When you play, the actuator responds to string vibration and causes the entire body to resonate with the effect — the reverb and chorus radiate acoustically from the guitar itself. Three simple knobs handle Chorus, Reverb (Room or Hall), and a combined TA Switch/Line Out volume control, so you can dial in just enough ambience without disrupting your playing flow. And when you need to plug into a PA or amp, the System 70 + SRT Piezo pickup has you covered with the same tone, amplified.

This is a concert-size guitar — Yamaha's FS-body shape — which sits slightly smaller than a dreadnought. It's a comfortable size whether you're playing at the kitchen table, a small stage, or a couch session at 11pm. Players who prefer a nimbler body without sacrificing resonance tend to gravitate here, and the FS-TA earns its place alongside some much pricier instruments on the merits of its acoustic voice alone.

Built on Solid Ground

The foundation of this guitar is a solid Sitka spruce top paired with mahogany back and sides — a combination that delivers the characteristic balance of clarity and warmth that spruce/mahogany pairings are known for. The solid top means it'll respond and open up more as you play it over time, and the scalloped bracing design enhances projection across the low-to-mid frequency range.

Yamaha's official description calls the FS-TA "great for fingerpicking," and the concert body with its slightly tighter waist and smaller lower bout rewards a fingerstyle approach with articulate note separation. Strummers will find plenty of volume and presence here too — the scalloped bracing makes sure of that.

The neck is Nato with a rosewood fingerboard — a smooth, fast-playing combination. Yamaha describes a straighter neck taper with hand-rolled fingerboard edges designed to reduce fatigue during extended playing sessions. The nut comes in at 1-11/16" (43mm), which is a standard comfortable width, and the 15-3/4" fingerboard radius keeps chords and single-note work equally comfortable. The gloss body finish contrasts with a matte neck finish, which many players prefer for a less sticky feel in the hand.

TransAcoustic Technology: How It Actually Works

Unlike effects that require an amplifier to audition or a battery-powered speaker to carry around, the TransAcoustic system makes the guitar body itself the speaker. An actuator mounted inside vibrates in response to the strings, transmitting those vibrations into the guitar's wood — and from there, into the air around the instrument. The result is reverb and chorus you can hear unplugged, coming from the guitar itself rather than from somewhere off to the side.

The controls are deliberately minimal: a Chorus knob, a Reverb knob (with a Room/Hall toggle), and a combined TA Switch and Line Out volume control. The battery box integrates into the end-pin jack, which means fewer holes in the body and less acoustic tone lost to electronic hardware cutouts. When you want to run clean into a PA, the SRT Piezo pickup delivers a transparent, balanced signal. The TA effects travel with you whether you're plugged in or not.
