All-Solid and Stage-Ready, Right Out of the Box
There's a certain kind of gigging guitarist who needs one guitar to do everything — sound great unplugged at a quiet coffeehouse, translate cleanly through a PA on a louder stage, and hold up night after night without complaint. The Yamaha A3M ARE was built specifically with that player in mind. It's a dreadnought-bodied acoustic-electric with a cutaway, all-solid tonewoods, and one of the more thoughtfully engineered onboard pickup systems you'll find at this price point.
The centerpiece of the A3M's construction is a solid Sitka spruce top treated with Yamaha's A.R.E. (Acoustic Resonance Enhancement) process — a high-heat, low-oxygen wood torrefaction treatment that removes moisture and volatiles from the wood, giving the top the resonant characteristics of a well-played, aged instrument. Pair that with solid mahogany back and sides, and you get a guitar that's warm in the low-mids and clear up top, with a naturally balanced response that works across playing styles.
Pair the tone with a Vintage Natural gloss finish that lets the wood's natural character speak for itself, and the A3M makes a strong case as a workhorse guitar that you'll actually want to bring to every gig.
A Top That's Already Been Through It
The A.R.E. process is worth understanding because it's not just a cosmetic treatment. Yamaha developed it as a wood modification technique that mimics what naturally happens to tonewoods over decades of playing and aging — the molecular structure of the spruce changes, reducing stiffness variability and improving how efficiently the top converts string vibration into sound. The result on the A3M is a top that responds with more openness and depth than you'd typically expect from a new guitar.
Supporting that top is a custom scalloped bracing pattern, with shorter bracing on the back as well. These modifications allow both the top and back to resonate more freely, with enhanced volume in the low-mid ranges. The dreadnought body contributes its characteristic full-bodied projection, while the single-cutaway gives you clean access to the upper frets — a combination that suits players who move between open chord strumming and lead work in the same set.
The SRT2 System: Stage Sound That Actually Sounds Like Your Guitar
The onboard electronics are where the A3M really earns its keep as a performance instrument. The System71 SRT2 pickup system uses an under-bridge piezo transducer blended with a preamp that models vintage studio microphone characteristics — specifically, you can blend between mic types and adjust between close (focus) and distant (wide) placement simulations using the dedicated controls on the side panel. The result is a plugged-in tone that captures more of the guitar's natural acoustic character rather than defaulting to the thin, brittle sound that plagues lesser piezo systems.
The preamp panel includes volume control, 3-band EQ with auto feedback reduction, a 3-way mic switch, a focus/wide proximity switch, a resonance dial, and the SRT blend knob. That's a lot of tone-shaping capability built into the guitar itself, which means you can dial in your sound without an external preamp. Players who've used this system consistently point to its ability to cut cleanly in a band mix while still retaining warmth and dynamics.
Neck, Hardware, and Build Details
The A3M's neck is built from African mahogany (3-ply construction) with what Yamaha calls a "High Comfort" profile — a design developed with input from players and luthiers to suit guitarists switching between electric and acoustic. The neck features a straighter taper for easier high-fret access, with hand-rolled fretboard edges that give the neck a played-in feel right away. The ebony fretboard and ebony bridge add density and sustain to the feel and tone, while the 43mm (1-11/16") nut width and 650mm (25-9/16") scale length keep the instrument in a comfortable, familiar range. The 15-3/4" fretboard radius is relatively flat, which tends to feel natural for both chord playing and single-note runs.
Hardware is straightforward and functional: die-cast chrome tuners keep the guitar in tune reliably, and the gloss body finish shows off the natural warmth of the mahogany and the A.R.E.-treated spruce top. Wood binding throughout adds a clean, cohesive aesthetic without going overboard. The pickguard design is a revival of the shape used on Yamaha's N1000 guitar from 1975 — a small nod to history that most people won't notice, but that's part of what makes the A-Series feel considered rather than generic.
