The FG That Started It All — Now With a Timeless Aged Look
There's a reason the Yamaha FG series has been around since 1966. It was the guitar that proved you didn't have to spend a lot to get something genuinely worth playing. The FG800 carries that tradition forward, and the Vintage Natural finish version gives it a look that feels like the guitar already has a story — that warm, slightly yellowed tone that makes you think it's been well-loved for decades, even fresh out of the box.
This is a dealer-exclusive finish, meaning you won't find it at every shop. If the look caught your eye, that's by design. But beyond the aesthetics, the FG800VN is the same well-built dreadnought underneath — solid Sitka spruce top, scalloped bracing, and all the playability Yamaha is known for delivering at this price point.
Whether you're just getting started or picking up a reliable second acoustic, this is a guitar that works hard and looks great doing it.
A Solid Top That Actually Rings Out
The FG800 starts with a solid Sitka spruce top — and that matters. Spruce is the benchmark tonewood for acoustic guitars for good reason: it's stiff, lightweight, and responsive across a wide dynamic range. Whether you're strumming open chords or picking single lines, the top moves with you. And unlike laminate tops, solid wood tends to open up and improve as it ages.
Yamaha pairs that top with a newly developed scalloped X-brace design. The scalloping lightens the braces themselves, letting the top vibrate more freely and giving the FG800 a fuller low end and better projection than its predecessor, the FG700. The result is a dreadnought that fills a room without fighting you to get there.
Built for Real Playing
The back and sides are nato and okume — two tonewoods that work together to deliver a warm, balanced voice with solid midrange presence. The nato neck has a slim, tapered profile with slightly rounded fretboard edges, which makes long practice sessions a lot more comfortable. The rosewood fingerboard and bridge offer smooth playability and a classic look that suits the Vintage Natural finish well.
Scale length is 650mm (25-9/16") with a 43mm (1-11/16") nut width — standard dreadnought dimensions that feel familiar to most players and accommodate steel strings without issue. Die-cast chrome tuners keep everything in tune reliably, and the gloss body finish with matte neck is a combination that looks polished but plays fast.
Classic Details Done Right
The FG800VN keeps things traditional: tortoise-pattern pickguard, black body binding, black-and-white soundhole rosette. These are small touches, but they add up to a guitar that looks like it belongs on a stage, not a clearance rack. The Vintage Natural finish — that aged, slightly amber tone — sets it apart from the standard Natural and Brown Sunburst versions in a way that's subtle but genuinely appealing.
No electronics here; this is a pure acoustic designed to be played unplugged. If you're looking for something you can just grab off the stand and play without fussing over cables or batteries, that simplicity is a feature, not a limitation.
