A Hummingbird Built for the Outlaw in the Room
The Epiphone Eric Church Hummingbird Dark Studio doesn't show up quietly. Draped in a brooding Cobra Burst gloss finish with black binding from top to back to fretboard, it's visually unlike anything else on the Hummingbird family tree. Eric Church brought his singular aesthetic to this signature model, and the result is a square-shouldered dreadnought that's as at home under stage lights as it is in a late-night writing session.
Underneath the dark styling is a guitar built to actually play — solid European spruce on top, layered mahogany back and sides, Fishman electronics ready to go the moment you need to plug in. Whether you're a fan of Church's music or just someone who wants a seriously well-specified acoustic-electric that stands out, this is a guitar that earns attention on its own terms.
Top-End Tone in a Player-Friendly Package
The solid European spruce top is the acoustic foundation here, delivering clarity, projection, and the kind of tonal complexity that tends to open up over time with playing. Paired with layered mahogany back and sides, the result is a warm, focused midrange with a clear high end — the classic spruce-and-mahogany pairing that has been a songwriter's staple for decades.
One thing that sets this Hummingbird apart from standard dreadnoughts is the 4" Performer body depth — slightly slimmer front-to-back than a traditional square-shouldered dreadnought. Players often find this reduces the fatigue of holding a big-bodied acoustic for long stretches, without giving up the tonal balance and projection the Hummingbird shape is known for.
Neck, Feel, and Electronics That Work
The set mahogany neck features a Rounded C profile — one of the most universally comfortable shapes around — paired with a rosewood fretboard, a 12" radius, and 20 frets. The nut comes in at 43mm wide, the scale length is 24.75", and grey pearloid split parallelogram inlays mark the positions while keeping the overall aesthetic dark and intentional.
For electronics, Epiphone fitted this guitar with a Fishman Sonicore undersaddle pickup and a Fishman Presys VT preamp. That combination gives you dependable, natural-sounding amplified tone without a lot of fuss — plug in, dial in your levels, and play. Grover Rotomatic tuners on the Kalamazoo-style headstock handle tuning stability, and the headstock itself features a grey/black mother-of-pearl Epiphone logo and Gibson Crown inlay, with a gold reproduction of Eric's signature on the back.
The Details That Define It
The custom Hummingbird Dark pickguard — finished with Carolina Blue and Silver accents — adds a signature twist on the classic Hummingbird design. Single-ply black binding runs throughout: top, back, and fretboard. The bridge is a belly-down rosewood unit, hardware is finished in nickel, and strings come factory-installed at .012–.053 gauge.
