The Sound That Built American Roots Music
Some instruments don't just play music — they carry a whole chapter of American history with them. The Dobro has been rooted in bluegrass, blues, and country since the 1920s, and the Hound Dog Round Neck keeps that tradition alive in a package that's genuinely accessible. Whether you're just discovering resonator playing or picking one up as a road-ready gigging instrument, this is a guitar that delivers the real thing.
The round neck design means you can play it like a standard guitar — fretting normally or laying it across your lap with a slide. That flexibility is a big deal for players who want to explore the world of resonator tone without committing to the lap steel setup of a square neck. The hand-rubbed Vintage Brown finish gives it a worn-in, vintage feel right out of the box.
This is a pure acoustic instrument — no pickup, no electronics — just wood, metal, and that unmistakable resonator bark projecting naturally through f-holes and an open sound well.
Body Built for Resonator Tone
The body is made of laminated figured maple — top, back, and sides — which keeps the instrument light and consistent while contributing to the bright, cutting character resonators are known for. At 3.5 inches deep, the body has plenty of volume to project the cone's sound outward. The unbound, plain maple ply construction keeps things classic and utilitarian, in the spirit of the original working-musician Dobros.
At the heart of the sound is a genuine nickel-plated Dobro cone measuring 10.5 inches, paired with a spider bridge featuring an ebony-capped maple base. The spider/cone combination is the inverted single-cone design that defines the Dobro's signature twangy, sustain-rich tone — quite different from the biscuit-bridge National-style resonator. Classic f-holes flanking the cone contribute to the overall projection and give the guitar its traditional look.
A Neck You Can Actually Play
The mahogany neck joins the body at the 12th fret — standard for round neck resonators, giving you 12 clear frets before the body. The rosewood fingerboard runs a 12-inch radius with 19 frets total and pearl dot inlays. Nut width is 1.75 inches at a 25-inch scale length, which falls right in the comfortable range for standard guitar players making the jump to resonator. A single-action adjustable truss rod with a classic Gibson bell-shaped cover keeps the neck in check over time.
Grover tuners keep things in tune reliably, and the nickel-plated tailpiece and hardware tie the whole look together. Players often find that this neck profile feels immediately familiar if you're coming from a regular flat-top acoustic — the round neck Dobro doesn't require a dramatic technique shift the way a square neck does.
