The Berp — short for Buzz Extension and Resistance Piece — is a compact practice tool that clamps directly onto your trumpet's mouthpiece receiver. Once it's on, you insert your mouthpiece into the Berp instead of the instrument, buzz away, and still press your valves normally. That means you're practicing buzzing and fingering at the same time, in your actual playing position, rather than holding the mouthpiece separately in the air.
The Berp's resistance dial is the key feature. For trumpet, you position the dial below the holes and push it up to partially cover them, dialing in more or less back-pressure as needed. Beginners often benefit from slightly higher resistance to help establish a solid buzz; as your embouchure develops, you can back the resistance off to match the feel of the instrument itself. It's also a practical option for quieter practice spaces — since the air isn't going into the instrument, the sound stays low.
The clamp is built to fit round, hex, or convex-shaped receiver openings. It attaches to the open end of the receiver with the mouthpiece removed, and once it's snug, switching back and forth between buzzing on the Berp and playing the trumpet is as simple as moving your mouthpiece. Most players prefer to position the Berp parallel to the receiver at roughly the "three o'clock" position, though you can experiment to find what's comfortable for you.
