The RG That Means Business

The Ibanez RG series has a reputation that speaks for itself — decades of fast necks, aggressive pickups, and guitars that just get out of your way. The RGT1221PB-SWL is what happens when Ibanez takes that formula and turns up every dial. Neck-through construction, a burl poplar top over an American basswood body, DiMarzio pickups, and a Wizard III neck that practically dares you to slow down. Dressed in Stained Wine Red Low Gloss, it looks as serious as it plays.

This guitar is built around the kind of player who values precision and sustain in equal measure. Whether you're threading together fast single-note runs or digging into heavy rhythms, the RGT1221PB is designed to stay in your way as little as possible — and deliver a lot on the other end.

This item is a B-Stock guitar sourced directly from the manufacturer. It is new and has never been previously owned. The photos shown are of the exact instrument you will receive. Before shipment, our licensed technician will inspect and professionally set up the guitar to ensure it is playing its best. During our inspection, we noticed Binding chipped neat nut, dent on bottom edge near the pickguard. (see pictures) Please note, these may not be the only cosmetic imperfections. As a B-Stock instrument, there may be additional minor blemishes that are small in nature and do not affect playability or performance.

The Wizard III Neck — Built for Speed and Stamina

The Wizard III profile is one of the thinnest, flattest necks Ibanez makes — and that's the whole point. The seven-piece Maple/Walnut construction runs neck-through-body, meaning there's no heel to fight you in the upper register. At 19mm thick at the first fret and tapering to 21mm at the 12th, it stays out of your palm all the way up. The 400mm (15.75") radius keeps the fretboard feeling flat and fast.

The 24 jumbo stainless steel frets come with Ibanez's Premium Fret Edge Treatment, which rounds and polishes the fret ends for a smooth, snag-free feel across the entire neck. Stainless steel also means they'll hold up much longer than conventional nickel frets. The ebony fretboard adds tight low-end response and a quick attack — a natural pairing for the Wizard III's speed-oriented design.

Acrylic and abalone block inlays and luminescent side dots round out the fretboard, giving you clear positional markers on stage and off.

DiMarzio Pickups and the dyna-MIX10 System

Ibanez didn't reach for generic house pickups here. The RGT1221PB-SWL carries a DiMarzio Air Norton at the neck and a DiMarzio The Tone Zone at the bridge — both passive, Alnico-magnet humbuckers with distinct personalities. The Air Norton leans warm and clear with strong dynamics; the Tone Zone delivers high output and aggressive midrange punch. Together they cover a wide tonal range.

The dyna-MIX10 switching system pairs a 5-way lever switch with an Alter Switch mini-toggle, giving you 10 distinct sound combinations — including coil-tap modes that produce realistic single-coil tones from the HH layout. Volume and tone controls keep the interface clean. It's a lot of flexibility without a lot of knobs.

Body, Hardware, and Construction

The body is American basswood with a 3mm poplar burl top. Basswood is a familiar choice in this guitar family — it's balanced and even across the frequency range, letting the pickups and your playing technique do the talking. The poplar burl top gives the guitar its visual signature, with natural figuring that changes character in different lighting. The Stained Wine Red Low Gloss finish lets the wood grain read clearly without the mirror-gloss that shows every fingerprint.

The independently-mounted Mono-rail bridge is designed to minimize cross-talk between strings, contributing to cleaner note separation and intonation. Gotoh MG-T locking machine heads handle tuning stability at the other end of the string. All hardware is finished in Cosmo Black. The nut is plastic, 43mm wide at the first fret, widening to 58mm at the 24th.
