Retro Shape, Modern Tone Machine

The Ibanez Talman bass has always had one of those silhouettes you notice from across the room — an asymmetric, vintage-flavored body that brings a little personality back to an instrument that can sometimes look a bit anonymous. But the TMB420BBKF isn't just a pretty shape. Under the hood, it's a well-thought-out PJ bass with active electronics and some genuinely smart material choices for the price.

At its core, this bass pairs a passive Dynamix P split-coil at the neck with a passive Dynamix J single-coil at the bridge, then runs both through an Ibanez Custom Electronics 2-band active EQ. That means you get the warm, thumpy foundation of a Precision-style pickup and the punchy, articulate bite of a Jazz-style bridge pickup — with active tone shaping on top to dial things in exactly where you want them.

Whether you're anchoring a live band mix, tracking in the studio, or just practicing at home, the TMB420BBKF gives you a lot of sonic ground to cover without asking much in return.

This item is a B-Stock guitar sourced directly from the manufacturer. It is new and has never been previously owned. The photos shown are of the exact instrument you will receive. Before shipment, our licensed technician will inspect and professionally set up the guitar to ensure it is playing its best. During our inspection, we noticed FINISH FLAW ON HEAD STOCK. (see pictures) Please note, these may not be the only cosmetic imperfections. As a B-Stock instrument, there may be additional minor blemishes that are small in nature and do not affect playability or performance.

A Neck That's Built to Stay Put

The TMB4 profile neck is made from roasted maple — a heat-treatment process that drives out moisture and increases the wood's resistance to humidity and temperature swings. For a working bassist who moves between venues, rehearsal spaces, and home practice, that stability is genuinely useful. You spend less time fighting tuning drift and more time playing.

The fretboard is Ebonol, a synthetic material made from layers of black paper and phenolic resin. It's designed to mimic the feel and density of ebony without the sourcing complications, and it contributes a tight, bright character to the overall tone. Twenty medium frets sit across the board, and the 240mm (approximately 9.4") radius keeps things comfortable whether you're playing open chords or working up the neck.

Nut width is 41mm — a comfortable, moderately narrow profile that makes position shifts feel natural without being cramped. The neck joins the Okoume body via a bolt-on joint, giving you clean upper-fret access and solid resonance transfer.

Body Wood and Hardware Worth Talking About

The body is Okoume, a lightweight African hardwood that produces a bright, resonant tone. It's a smart material choice for a bass in this range — it keeps the overall weight manageable during longer sets while still contributing real character to the sound. The satin polyurethane finish keeps things tactile and comfortable, and the Black Flat color gives this Talman an understated, all-business look with the black hardware completing the aesthetic.

The B10 bridge offers fully adjustable intonation and solid tuning stability, keeping your bass accurate from the open string all the way up the neck. Controls are handled via two stacked knobs: one stack manages volume and pickup balance, the other handles bass and treble boost/cut via the 2-band EQ. It's a clean, logical layout that lets you make adjustments quickly without hunting around.
