Five Strings, One Striking Bass

If you've been looking for a 5-string bass that earns attention both on and off the stage, the Ibanez SR405EPBDX in Tropical Seafloor Burst is a hard one to walk past. That teal burst over a naturally figured Poplar Burl top means every instrument has its own unique look — no two are exactly the same. But the SR405EPBDX isn't just a pretty face. Under that striking finish is a bass built for real playing situations, whether you're locking into a groove at rehearsal or working through complex passages at a late-night session.

Ibanez has been refining the SR (Soundgear) series for decades, and the SR405EPBDX carries that tradition forward with a lightweight, fast-playing instrument that covers a lot of tonal ground. If you play styles that demand flexibility — funk, rock, R&B, jazz — this bass is designed with you in mind.

This item is a B-Stock guitar sourced directly from the manufacturer. It is new and has never been previously owned. The photos shown are of the exact instrument you will receive. Before shipment, our licensed technician will inspect and professionally set up the guitar to ensure it is playing its best. During our inspection, we noticed a finish imperfection near knobs. (see pictures) Please note, these may not be the only cosmetic imperfections. As a B-Stock instrument, there may be additional minor blemishes that are small in nature and do not affect playability or performance.

A Neck That Stays Out of Your Way

The SR5 profile on the SR405EPBDX is one of the things players notice right away. The 5-piece Maple/Walnut neck is slim, fast, and comfortable — great for both players who are new to 5-string basses and those who've been playing them for years. Maple and Walnut laminated together also adds structural stability, so the neck holds up well to changes in humidity and temperature.

The Jatoba fretboard has a reddish-brown color and produces a focused midrange with crisp, articulate highs. Twenty-four medium frets give you a full two-octave range per string, and the 34" standard scale keeps the tension familiar if you're coming from a 4-string. Nut width is 45mm, and string spacing at the bridge is 16.5mm — tight enough for speed, while still giving your plucking hand room to breathe.

Pickups and Electronics Built for Versatility

The SR405EPBDX runs a pair of Ibanez PowerSpan Dual Coil pickups — one at the neck, one at the bridge. These are passive pickups with exposed pole pieces, designed to produce a stronger signal and increase high-frequency response without losing the low end. The result is a harmonically detailed, dynamically expressive tone that works across a wide range of playing styles.

Where things get interesting is the Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band active EQ paired with a 3-way Power Tap switch. That switch gives you three distinct tonal characters: full humbucker mode for a thick, warm sound; single-coil mode for punchy, articulate output; and a blended Power Tap mode that combines the clarity of single coil with the low-end body of the humbucker. Controls include a master volume, balancer, and individual bass, mid, and treble knobs — straightforward to dial in, and flexible enough to cover a lot of sonic territory.

Hardware and Finish

The Accu-cast B505 bridge is a practical piece of hardware — it allows you to adjust string spacing by ±1.5mm, which is a real benefit if you have a specific preference for how your strings sit under your fingers. Gold hardware throughout gives the bass a polished, classic look that pairs well with the Tropical Seafloor Burst finish.

The body itself features a Poplar Burl top over an Okoume back, finished in gloss polyurethane. The bolt-on neck joint uses Ibanez's All Access Neck Joint (AANJ) construction, keeping the upper frets accessible without the body getting in your way.
