An Explorer-Inspired Bruiser Built for High Gain
If you grew up on Black Label Society or spent any time watching Zakk Wylde bulldoze through a riff, you know exactly what this guitar is about. The Wylde Audio Blood Eagle takes the classic Explorer-style silhouette and evolves it — adding bevel edges, a flat top, and the kind of purposeful aggression that comes only from a guitarist who actually plays the things he designs.
The Blood Eagle isn't a guitar trying to cover all genres. It's built for players who want a hot, focused instrument that nails heavy rhythm tones and screaming leads without compromise. If that sounds like you, read on.
This particular unit is B-Stock, meaning it is new — never owned or played — but ships from Wylde Audio with a noted cosmetic issue (see details below). Our licensed tech will inspect and set it up for you before it leaves our shop.
A Mahogany Core Built for Sustain and Warmth
The body is solid mahogany, a wood long associated with thick fundamental tone and the kind of natural sustain that keeps notes blooming under high gain. Mahogany doesn't get thin or harsh when pushed — it rewards distortion with body and presence rather than ice-pick treble. The Mahogany Blackout finish gives the whole guitar a matte black look that makes the wood grain just barely visible — understated but unmistakably intentional.
Construction is set-neck, meaning the 3-piece maple neck is glued into the body for tighter coupling and added resonance compared to a bolt-on joint. The neck shape is the Zakk 'C' profile — a substantial, comfortable C that feels sturdy without being a workout. At the first fret it measures .79" thick; at the 12th, .93" — a gradual, even taper that suits both chord work and single-note runs.
Ebony Fretboard, EMG Pickups, and Hardware That Holds Tune
The ebony fretboard is smooth, dense, and fast — a material known for its articulate attack and tight low end, which pairs well with active pickups. The 14" radius keeps bending comfortable and reduces fretting out on high-fret lead work, while 22 X-Jumbo frets give you plenty of playing surface. Large Mother of Pearl block inlays add a classic visual contrast against the dark ebony. Scale length is 24.625" — a slightly shorter-than-Fender measurement that eases string tension and contributes to the warmer overall feel.
Pickups are an EMG 81/85 active set — the 81 at the bridge for tight, high-output rhythm attack; the 85 at the neck for fuller, warmer lead tones. These are active pickups requiring a 9V battery (clip-in compartment included) and are wired to a Volume/Volume/Tone/3-way switch configuration. The TonePros LPM04 Tune-O-Matic bridge locks in place for maximum tuning stability and intonation transfer, backed up by Grover Rotomatic 18:1 tuners that hold tune reliably. All hardware is satin black, tying the aggressive aesthetic together cleanly. The Graph Tech Black TUSQ XL nut measures 43mm wide — a comfortable width for standard 6-string playing.
