Seven Watts of Transatlantic Tube Tone

There's a certain kind of amp that just makes you want to keep playing. The Fender Bassbreaker 007 Combo is one of those amps. It's small enough to sit on a desk, light enough to toss in the car, and loud enough to fill a room with the kind of warm, touch-sensitive tube tone that bigger, heavier rigs spend a lot of money trying to replicate. At 7 watts, you can actually push this thing — and that's where it gets interesting.

The Bassbreaker series was Fender asking a genuinely fun question: what if we'd gone dirtier instead of cleaner back in the '60s? The 007 Combo is the most compact answer to that question — a single-channel, all-tube amp built around a British-flavored EL84 power tube rather than the American 6L6s you'd expect from Fender. The result sits somewhere between a tweed Fender and an early British crunch machine, and it's a tone that rewards players who like to let the amp do some of the work.

Whether you're tracking at home, woodshedding in an apartment, or looking for a grab-and-go rig for smaller shows, the Bassbreaker 007 is genuinely hard to put down once you're plugged in.

All-Tube Class A Power — Small Box, Real Bite

Two 12AX7 preamp tubes and a single EL84 power tube push 7 watts of true Class A amplification through the Celestion Ten 30 speaker. Running it wide open is exactly as satisfying as it sounds — the low wattage means you hit power-amp breakup at manageable volumes, and the touch response you get from a single-ended EL84 circuit is something solid-state amps have been trying to fake for decades.

The control layout is refreshingly simple: Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, and Master. No menus, no modes, no distractions. Higher gain settings get raunchy without losing the character of your guitar — single-coils stay snappy, humbuckers get thick and chewy, and the dynamics stay intact throughout.

The Treble Boost Switch: One Button, Big Difference

The front-panel treble boost is one of those features that sounds simple on paper and turns out to be genuinely useful in practice. It's a vintage-style circuit that adds upper harmonics and bumps the guitar's output signal into the preamp for extra crunch — an essential component of early hard rock tones. It's switchable right from the front panel, and it can also be operated via an optional single-button footswitch if you want hands-free control.

With the boost engaged, the 007 gets more aggressive — still musical, still tube-amp alive, but with a noticeably tighter, more forward-cutting voice. Roll it off and you're back to cleaner territory. It's a one-trick switch, but it's a good trick.

Direct Recording Output and a Celestion Speaker Worth Knowing

The 007 includes a 1/4" line output that connects directly to recording gear or feeds a larger power amp — useful for home recording situations where you want real tube tone in the DAW without mic placement headaches. It doesn't simulate the speaker, so results will vary depending on your interface and signal chain, but the option is there and players find it handy.

The Celestion Ten 30 is an 8-ohm, 30-watt speaker that handles warm low end, expressive midrange, and crisp highs in stride. It's a good match for the 007's tonal character — open and clean when the amp is running easy, and capable of a satisfying crunch when pushed. The cabinet itself is built from 7-ply 3/4" medium-density fibreboard and finished in dark grey lacquered tweed with a black grille cloth, block Fender logo, and bold pointer knobs.
