Your Stage Wherever You Go

The Yamaha CK61 is one of those keyboards that makes sense the moment you see it. You've got a gig at a coffee shop Saturday morning, band practice in a basement that night, and maybe a worship set Sunday if you're feeling ambitious. You can't haul around a 73-key Nord or a full rig, but you still need sounds that actually work. That's exactly what Yamaha built here: 61 keys, built-in speakers, runs on batteries, weighs 12 pounds, and packs the piano and organ sounds from keyboards that cost twice as much. It's not trying to do everything—it's trying to do the things that matter when you're actually making music.

What makes the CK61 different from most portable keyboards is the FSB action. Yamaha pulled this from their vintage Electone organs—it's got more resistance than a typical synth keybed and longer key travel, so you can dig into piano parts without feeling like you're tapping on plastic, but it's still light enough to play organ glissandos and rapid synth lines. It's a smart middle ground. You also get nine drawbars for hands-on organ control, dedicated knobs for filter and envelope tweaking, and an interface that keeps you out of menus. If you've ever fumbled through five screens trying to layer a Rhodes under a pad, you'll appreciate that.

This keyboard makes the most sense for gigging keyboardists who need something light and flexible, church musicians who bounce between venues, or anyone who wants a solid practice/writing tool that doesn't feel like a compromise. If you're a pianist who only plays weighted keys, the CK88 is the better match. But if you play a little bit of everything and you're tired of choosing between portability and actual playability, the CK61 hits that sweet spot.

Sounds Borrowed from the Big Leagues

The CK61 combines sounds from Yamaha's CP Stage Piano and YC Stage Keyboard lines, using the same AWM2 sound engine that powers keyboards at double the price. You get piano samples from three Yamaha concert grands—the CFX, S700, and CF3—plus the U1 upright. The keyboard has 363 voices and 128-note polyphony, which handles most real-world playing situations without voice stealing. The pianos feel responsive and dynamic through the FSB action, and you've got vintage Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, DX7-style FM EPs, Clavinet sounds, plus strings, brass, and synth pads.

The organ section is based on the Yamaha Reface YC and features five organ types, nine drawbars, rotary speaker effect, percussion, and vibrato/chorus. This is where the CK61 really shines for live players—you can adjust drawbar settings, switch rotary speed, and tweak percussion in real time without diving into a menu. Whether you need a mellow jazz organ or a full-tilt rock sound, the controls are right there under your hands.

The synth sounds cover analog-style pads, leads, basses, and textures. You get dedicated filter cutoff, resonance, attack, and release knobs, so you can shape sounds on the fly. There's also an A/D input for plugging in a mic or another instrument, and you can route that signal through the onboard effects. Built-in speakers and battery operation let you play anywhere, and Bluetooth audio input means you can stream backing tracks from your phone. It's the kind of feature set that shows Yamaha was actually thinking about how people use keyboards outside the studio.

Built for Real-World Gigging

The CK61 features Yamaha's FSB (Future System Basic) action, inspired by their legendary FX-1 Electone organs, with heavier initial key resistance and increased key travel. It's not weighted, but it's not flimsy either—you get enough feedback to play expressively without the weight slowing you down on synth or organ parts. Two split points let you play up to three sounds across the keyboard, so you can layer piano, bass, and pad simultaneously or set up complex splits for live performance.

The interface is designed to keep you playing instead of menu-diving. Dedicated category buttons give you instant access to pianos, organs, and synth sounds. A 3-band master EQ helps you adjust to different rooms. The effects section includes drive, modulation, delay, and reverb with hands-on controls. The display and buttons change color based on which layer you're editing, so you always know where you are. The keyboard offers 128-note polyphony and features drive effects, two insert effect systems with 36 types each, plus delay and reverb.

Built-in speakers are powered by dual 6-watt amplifiers, which is enough for practice, small rooms, or monitoring yourself on stage. The keyboard can run on eight AA batteries, giving you portable operation when you don't have access to power. USB audio interface lets you record directly to your computer, and MIDI in/out gives you hardware connectivity for external modules or DAW control. At 12 pounds, the CK61 is one of the lightest stage keyboards with this feature set, and that makes a real difference when you're loading in and out multiple times a week.
