The Tremolo Pedal That Just Works
Tremolo is one of the oldest guitar effects around — it was baked right into amplifiers before anyone thought to put effects in a box. The Boss TR-2 takes that same idea and packages it into the compact stompbox format Boss has been perfecting for decades. Plug in, tweak three knobs, and you're there. Slow, dreamy flutter or fast, choppy stutter — it's all on tap.
What makes the TR-2 stand out is the Wave knob. Most tremolo pedals give you one waveform and that's it. The TR-2 lets you sweep continuously from a smooth triangle wave to a sharper square wave, which completely changes the character of the effect. It's a small feature that opens up a surprisingly wide range of sounds.
Whether you're chasing a '60s surf shimmer, a country warble, or something a bit more modern and choppy, the TR-2 handles the whole range without getting in your way. It's a solid, reliable tremolo that earns its spot on just about any pedalboard.
Three Knobs, Endless Variation
The TR-2 keeps things simple with three controls: Rate, Wave, and Depth. The Rate knob adjusts the speed of the tremolo effect — from slow, rolling swells all the way up to fast, rhythmic stutters. The Depth knob controls how pronounced the volume modulation is, from subtle to dramatic. And the Wave knob is where things get interesting.
That Wave control sweeps the LFO waveform continuously from triangle to square. A triangle wave gives you a smooth, rounded pulsation that feels natural and organic — very much in the spirit of old amp tremolo. Dial toward square and the transitions sharpen up, creating a choppier, more rhythmic effect with harder on/off feel. The LFO waveform also features an asymmetric duty ratio, which gives you additional control over the tremolo's phasing character.
Analog Circuit, Buffered Bypass
The TR-2 runs an analog circuit — the same approach that made vintage amp tremolo sound the way it does. No digital conversion in the signal path, just a straightforward analog LFO modulating your guitar's volume in real time.
Bypass is buffered, which is the standard Boss approach. A buffered bypass keeps your signal strong and clear even with long cable runs between your guitar, pedalboard, and amp — something players with bigger boards tend to appreciate. Power is handled by a single 9V battery or an optional PSA-series AC adapter (sold separately).
Built to Last
Boss compact pedals have a well-earned reputation for durability, and the TR-2 is no different. The housing is the same rugged chassis found across the Boss compact lineup — stage-ready and built to handle real-world use. At roughly 73mm wide and 129mm deep, it fits cleanly on a pedalboard without hogging space. I/O is mono in, mono out via standard 1/4-inch jacks.
