A Classic Delay Gets the One Feature It Was Always Missing
If you've spent any time around pedalboards, you've seen a Boss DD-3. It's been a go-to delay since 1986 — simple four-knob layout, reliable repeats, built like a tank. The only thing players ever asked for was tap tempo. The DD-3T is exactly that: the same DD-3 circuit you already know, now with an onboard tap tempo switch and all the practical upgrades that come with it.
The sound circuitry and control layout are identical to the DD-3, so there's no learning curve if you're already familiar with the original. You get the same clear, punchy digital repeats across a delay range of 12.5 to 800 ms, divided into three ranges for quick setup. The new additions are purely about making the pedal more useful in real playing situations.
Whether you're locking delay into the tempo of a song, building ambient textures, or keeping things simple with a straight slap-back, the DD-3T handles it without fuss. It's a good fit for players who want a reliable, no-nonsense delay that can keep up with a live set.
Tap Tempo — Finally Built In
Tap tempo is the headline addition here, and Boss implemented it in a practical way. In delay mode, hold the pedal switch for two seconds to toggle between standard bypass and tap operation. If you'd rather have a dedicated tap switch, plug an external footswitch into the TEMPO jack for on-demand control without interrupting your playing.
When tap is engaged, the Mode knob becomes your subdivision selector: quarter-note triplet, dotted-eighth note, or straight quarter note. That dotted-eighth setting in particular is a go-to for the rhythmic delay sound you'll recognize from countless recordings — tap the tempo and the repeats lock right in.
Wet/Dry Output and Short Loop
The DD-3T carries over the direct output jack from the DD-3, but it's been relocated next to the main output for easier cable routing. Plugging into the direct out converts the main output to delay-only signal, letting you send wet and dry to separate amps. If your amp or switcher has a parallel effects loop, a dummy plug in the direct out mutes the dry signal entirely for effect-only blending.
The original DD-3's Hold function is also here, now called Short Loop to reflect how players actually use it today. You can capture up to 800 ms of audio, loop it continuously, and play over the top — a simple but genuinely fun feature for live experimentation.
Bypass and Power
The DD-3T uses Boss's buffered bypass, which maintains your signal strength and high-end clarity across long cable runs — a practical choice for players with larger pedalboards. Power comes from a 9V battery (alkaline or carbon-zinc) or an optional Boss PSA-series AC adaptor. No power supply is included, so factor that in if you're running a powered pedalboard.
