Dark, Dirty, and Deliberately Holey

Some cymbal designers chase brightness and shimmer. Dave Weckl and the Sabian team went a completely different direction with the HHX Evolution O-Zone Crash — and then punched eight 2" holes in it for good measure. The result is one of the most distinctive-sounding crash cymbals out there: raw, aggressive, and unashamedly trashy in the best possible way.

This is the cymbal for the moments when a standard crash just isn't enough. Where a regular crash blossoms and sustains, the O-Zone hits hard and gets out fast — think China-adjacent attitude wrapped in a traditional crash form factor. The HHX Evolution O-Zone Crashes deliver a raw, dark and dirty bite in a thin effects/crash cymbal designed with Dave Weckl.

Whether you need a cutting accent in a dense mix, a trash crash to punctuate a groove, or a stacking partner for layered effects, this 18" O-Zone gives you a specific, purposeful sound that's hard to replicate any other way.

What the Holes Actually Do

The "O-Zone" design features multiple holes strategically placed in the cymbal, which dramatically alters its sound. These holes create a raw, trashy, and highly explosive attack with a very short sustain and quick decay. This unique characteristic allows the cymbal to deliver immediate, cutting accents that don't linger, providing a distinct sonic texture for your drumming.

The 18" HHX Evolution O-Zone has eight 2" holes that serve to increase the nasty-factor. They also lighten the weight of the cymbal, so while size and volume remain the same, the response is actually much faster with less metal mass to move. In practice, you get a cymbal that reacts immediately and clears the sonic space just as quickly — useful when your mix is already crowded with guitars, keys, or dense layering.

HHX Craftsmanship and Materials

The O-Zone Crash is part of Sabian's HHX Evolution series, built from B20 bronze — a traditional alloy combining copper, tin, and a touch of silver. Hand-guided large-peen hammering creates the complex, modern-dark tone of HHX, while many of the most popular models — like Evolution — receive hand-hammering using peens and anvils that have been hand-shaped in the Vault.

The brilliant finish gives the cymbal a polished, visually striking appearance on stage, and contributes to its cutting projection. The thin weight profile keeps the response sensitive and fast — you won't have to dig in hard to get a full, expressive sound out of it. Players often find this makes it especially effective at lower volumes too, where heavier cymbals can feel sluggish.
