Taylor's been making versions of this guitar for decades, but the Next Generation 714ce is something genuinely new. It brings the same warm, touch-sensitive character that players have always loved from cedar and rosewood, now paired with a redesigned neck system and updated electronics that make the whole package feel decidedly current.
If you've spent time with a cedar-topped acoustic, you already know what to expect: a voice that responds immediately to the lightest pick or fingertip pressure, with a slightly darker, rounder quality than the bright pop of spruce. Indian rosewood adds its own depth to the picture — clear trebles, throaty lows, and a bloom of overtones that opens up the longer a note rings. Together they make for a guitar that rewards a light touch without going thin, and can handle a more assertive strum without losing its shape.
The 714ce's Grand Auditorium body threads the needle between a dreadnought's projection and a parlor's comfort — versatile enough for fingerstyle, strumming, or anything in between. With the Venetian cutaway, the upper frets are genuinely accessible rather than just technically reachable.
Scalloped V-Class Bracing and the Sound It Creates
This all-purpose Grand Auditorium features back and sides of Indian rosewood paired with a Western Red cedar top, with scalloped V-Class bracing inside to dial up more volume, sustain and open-string resonance. The "scalloped" refinement to Taylor's V-Class architecture opens up the top further, giving the cedar more room to vibrate and push air with less effort — exactly what that tonewood excels at.
Building on Taylor's legacy of easy-playing necks, the new Action Control Neck pairs a long-tenon joint for added warmth and depth, and players will appreciate the simple adjustability of the innovative neck joint. The long-tenon connection between neck and body isn't just an engineering detail — it contributes directly to how energy transfers through the guitar, giving notes a warmer, more resonant character right at the point where your fingers meet the wood.
Claria Electronics and the Details That Finish It
Taylor's new Claria electronics make it remarkably easy to plug in and produce rich, adaptable amplified tone for live settings. The Next Generation 714ce sports crisp white body binding, a green abalone rosette with black and white accents, a Reflections inlay suite in green abalone, gold tuning machines, a faux-tortoiseshell pickguard, and a full-body natural gloss finish.
The fingerboard and bridge are West African Crelicam Ebony with Black binding, the nut is Black Tusq, and the saddle is White Micarta. The neck carries a Standard Carve profile and a satin finish, which makes long playing sessions — and especially position shifts — noticeably easier than a high-gloss neck. Scale length is 25-1/2" with a 1-3/4" nut width, putting it right in the comfortable middle of standard acoustic neck dimensions.
