A Show-Stopper from the 600 Series

Taylor doesn't do limited editions often, and when they do, they tend to make them count. The 614ce-LTD was introduced at the 2019 NAMM Show as a special take on one of Taylor's most beloved Grand Auditoriums — the kind of guitar you'd notice on a wall from across the room before you ever heard a note. The Desert Sunburst finish wraps a set of quilted maple back and sides that really come alive under the gloss coat, with that rippling, three-dimensional figuring that makes each guitar uniquely its own.

But this isn't just a pretty face. Taylor upgraded the tonal formula for this limited run, swapping in quilted maple in place of standard figured Big Leaf maple, and pairing it with a torrefied Sitka spruce top — their special roasting process that mimics the opened-up character of an aged instrument right out of the gate. Add Taylor's V-Class bracing and ES2 electronics, and you have a fully loaded acoustic-electric that plays and sounds as special as it looks.

If you've been eyeing the 614ce platform but want something a little more distinctive on stage or in the studio, this limited edition is exactly that — the same respected Grand Auditorium architecture, dressed for a special occasion.

Quilted Maple Meets Torrefied Spruce

The tonewood combination here is genuinely interesting. Quilted maple back and sides bring maple's characteristic sonic transparency and clear midrange definition, while the figuring adds visual depth that standard Big Leaf maple simply doesn't offer. The back and sides are finished with a hand-rubbed Brown Sugar stain that draws out the quilt's natural dimensionality before the Desert Sunburst gloss coat is applied.

The torrefied Sitka spruce top has been roasted using Taylor's proprietary process, which drives out moisture and alters the wood's cellular structure to produce a more played-in tone with extra sweetness and depth — something you'd normally wait years to develop in a standard spruce top. Together, these two tonewoods make for a guitar that's balanced yet dynamic, transparent yet full.

V-Class Bracing: Taylor's Modern Foundation

Inside the 614ce-LTD, Taylor's V-Class bracing architecture replaces the century-old X-brace standard. The design uses stiffness parallel to the strings for sustain, while flexibility on either side generates the air movement needed for strong projection. The practical result is a guitar that's noticeably louder and more sustaining than its predecessors, while also playing more in tune across the entire neck — a genuine improvement that players notice in real-world use.

The mahogany neck is finished in satin for a comfortable, smooth feel in the fretting hand. It meets the body at the 14th fret via a Venetian cutaway, giving you full access up the ebony fretboard. The 25.5" scale length is Taylor's standard, providing familiar string tension and a balanced feel across all six strings.

Appointments and Electronics

Taylor loaded this limited edition with a suite of upgraded cosmetics that suit the occasion. Ebony binding frames the body, a paua/ebony rosette surrounds the soundhole, and mother-of-pearl Wings inlays run up the ebony fretboard and peghead. Silver side dots keep things practical without distracting from the overall aesthetic. The result is a cohesive, refined look that doesn't tip into overdone.

For players who perform, the onboard Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) electronics capture the guitar's natural acoustic voice through a behind-the-saddle pickup design, sending a clear and accurate signal to the house. Volume and tone controls sit unobtrusively on the body, and the system integrates cleanly into the 614ce's design without altering its acoustic character. The nut is black graphite and the saddle is Micarta, rounding out a well-thought-out package from top to bottom.
