A Nylon-String Taylor That Plays Like a Taylor
Classical guitar is a beautiful world — but for a lot of steel-string players, stepping into it can feel like learning a new instrument. Wide necks, open-slotted tuners, floppier strings, and a totally different feel. The Taylor 112ce-N sidesteps all of that friction. It gives you the warm, singing sweetness of nylon strings in a compact Grand Concert body that will feel immediately familiar if you've spent any time on a modern steel-string acoustic.
This is Taylor's first 100 Series nylon-string cutaway Grand Concert — and it's built around a solid torrefied spruce top that brings an almost "broken-in" quality right out of the box. Pair that with layered sapele back and sides, a standard Taylor neck carve, and onboard ES-N electronics, and you've got a nylon-string guitar that works just as naturally at an intimate singer-songwriter gig as it does for fingerstyle practice at home.
If you've been curious about nylon strings but didn't want to completely upend your playing style to explore them, the 112ce-N is a genuine bridge between those two worlds.
A Solid Top Built for Warmth From Day One
The standout tonewood here is the solid torrefied spruce top. Torrefaction is Taylor's process of heat-treating the spruce before it goes on the guitar — the result is a top that behaves acoustically like aged, played-in wood rather than something fresh off the shelf. Featuring a solid, torrefied spruce top paired with layered sapele back and sides, this acoustic-electric offers a clear, balanced voice ideal for fingerstyle players and light strumming.
A specialized voicing architecture is designed to enhance the natural warmth and clarity of the nylon strings, providing a well-balanced and responsive tone. The layered sapele back and sides add structural stability — a smart choice for a guitar that's likely to move between gigs, lessons, and living rooms — while contributing a midrange focus that keeps the nylon-string character front and center.
A Neck That Welcomes Steel-String Players
One of the main reasons steel-string players avoid classical guitars is the neck. Traditional classical necks are wide, flat, and built around a very specific technique. The 112ce-N takes a different approach. Its 12-fret neck and 1-7/8-inch nut width (narrower than a traditional classical guitar neck) make it easy to play, especially for those transitioning from steel-string guitars.
The 112ce-N features a Standard Carve neo-tropical mahogany neck, and 1.875-inch nut width — a combination of specs that Sweetwater guitarists find far closer in feel to a standard Taylor than an old-school classical guitar. The scale length is 25-1/2 inches — the same as most full-scale steel-string guitars — so your muscle memory for chord shapes and position playing carries right over. The 12-fret geometry places the bridge in a livelier part of the lower bout for added warmth and touch sensitivity, and the Venetian cutaway grants easy access to upper registers.
Stage-Ready with Taylor ES-N Electronics
Equipped with onboard ES-N electronics, the 112ce-N offers reliable amplified sound for studio settings and stage performances. The ES-N system is Taylor's dedicated nylon-string pickup solution — tuned to capture the particular resonance and dynamics of nylon rather than using a standard steel-string transducer. That matters in a live setting, where the nuance of fingerstyle playing and the softer attack of nylon strings can easily get lost.
Its matte-finished body features black binding and a 3-ring rosette. The ebony fretboard is inlaid with 4mm Dots in Italian acrylic and the slotted peghead is outfitted with classical nickel tuners. The West African Crelicam Ebony bridge and fretboard bring both visual warmth and a clean, responsive playing surface that suits the precision demands of fingerstyle technique.
