A One-of-One Custom Shop Build That Starts With the Wood
Some guitars make you stop mid-sentence. This is one of them. Gibson's Made to Measure program exists precisely for instruments like this — a Les Paul Custom built to a single specific order, never to be repeated. The 7A quilted maple top is the first thing you'll notice, and probably the last thing you'll stop staring at. At the top end of Gibson's figured-wood grading scale, a 7A quilt has the kind of three-dimensional depth that shifts and ripples as light moves across it.
The DC Rust finish wraps everything in a warm, earthy rust tone that draws out every contour of the quilt figure. It's a finish that feels intentional and distinctive — not a standard catalog color, but something chosen specifically to complement this level of top. Underneath all that visual drama, you're still looking at a classic Les Paul Custom platform: mahogany body, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, and a long neck tenon that's been a hallmark of Custom Shop construction for decades.
This is a guitar for someone who wanted something completely their own. There is no other one exactly like it.
The Top — and What It's Sitting On
The 7A quilted maple top is hand-selected — Gibson uses this grade to denote exceptional figuring, where the quilt pattern is pronounced, consistent, and visually striking from every angle. Paired with the DC Rust finish, the top becomes the defining visual element of the instrument.
Beneath it sits a mahogany body — the classic tonewood foundation of every Les Paul Custom. Mahogany contributes the warmth, depth, and sustain that Les Paul players have relied on for decades. The maple top adds clarity and definition on the high end, sharpening note attack without thinning out the midrange. It's a combination that's been refined over generations of Custom Shop builds for good reason. The body carries 7-ply binding on the top and 5-ply on the back, framing the instrument with the kind of detail that belongs on something built one at a time.
Neck, Fingerboard, and Feel
The mahogany neck is carved into a Medium C profile — comfortable for extended playing sessions without losing the substantial, planted feel that Les Paul Custom players tend to prefer. The 12-inch fingerboard radius keeps chording comfortable and bends consistent across the full length of the neck. Scale length is the standard 24.75 inches, with a long neck tenon joint for maximum resonance transfer between neck and body.
The fingerboard itself is ebony — a dense, smooth wood that gives each note a clean, articulate attack with a slightly glassier surface feel than rosewood. It wears mother-of-pearl block inlays, one of the signature visual appointments of the Les Paul Custom since its 1950s introduction. Nut width is 1.687 inches, with a Corian nut. Twenty-two medium jumbo frets give you plenty of room to work with.
Pickups and Hardware
The electronics are Gibson's 490R/498T humbucker pair — a matched set that's been a Custom Shop standard for years. The 490R in the neck position is voiced in the style of a vintage PAF humbucker: warm, clear, with a smoothness that works well for rhythm playing and leads alike. The 498T in the bridge uses an Alnico V magnet and a hotter wind for a stronger attack and more pronounced midrange punch, adding edge and output when you push it into overdrive.
Hardware is Grover Kidney tuners for solid tuning stability, a Tune-o-Matic bridge, and a stopbar tailpiece — the classic Les Paul Custom hardware setup. The combination of the long neck tenon, TOM bridge, and stopbar tailpiece contributes to the sustain and resonance the platform is known for.
Factory Cosmetic Note:
This guitar arrived with a very small factory cosmetic imperfection consisting of a minor indent near the heel of the neck. The imperfection is difficult to see and is only visible under certain lighting conditions. After reviewing the guitar with Gibson, we were authorized to retain the instrument and offer it at a discount from its original intended selling price of $8899. This is strictly a cosmetic issue and does not affect playability, structural integrity, tone, or warranty coverage in any way.
