One Guitar. One Build. One Chance.

Every now and then a guitar walks through the door that stops you mid-sentence. This is one of those. Built by Gibson's Custom Shop through their Made to Measure program — meaning it was ordered, spec'd, and built as a one-of-a-kind instrument — this Les Paul Custom wears a 7A-grade quilted maple top in Bengal Burst, a warm amber-to-dark-edge finish that was specifically chosen to pull every ounce of depth and dimension out of that figure. There is no other guitar exactly like this one. That's not a pitch — it's just what "1 of 1" means.

The Les Paul Custom has been the standard-bearer for everything a solidbody electric guitar can look and feel like since the mid-1950s. Multi-ply binding, ebony fingerboard, block inlays, gold hardware — it's a lot, and it works. When you drop a hand-selected 7A quilt top into that equation, you get something that's genuinely hard to take your eyes off of, even before you plug it in.

This guitar is for the player who knows exactly what they want and isn't willing to compromise on any part of it. Whether you're a devoted Les Paul person or someone who's never owned one and has been waiting for the right reason to start, this is a compelling argument.

The Top That Defines This Guitar

The 7A grade designation is Gibson's highest quilted maple top tier. The figure has to be dramatic, the movement three-dimensional, and the consistency across the entire top essentially flawless — most tops simply don't make the cut. Paired with the Bengal Burst finish, the quilt figure is lit from within, shifting from a warm, rich amber at the center to a deep, smoky edge that frames the whole top. It rewards every light source differently.

The finish work is carried out in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, which means the wood breathes naturally and the figure reads with full clarity — no thick poly finish flattening the visual depth. Multi-ply binding surrounds the body on both top and back, completed one layer at a time, with 7-ply binding on the top and 5-ply on the back accentuating the quilted maple's figuring on every side.

Built on a Mahogany Foundation

Under that top is the wood combination that's defined the Les Paul Custom since its modern era: a weight-relieved solid mahogany body paired with a solid mahogany neck. Weight relief sheds some heft without compromising the natural resonance or sustain you'd expect from the platform. The neck is carved into a Modern Medium C profile — measuring approximately 0.82" at the 1st fret and 0.965" at the 12th — a comfortable, familiar shape that works for a wide range of playing styles and hand sizes. Because this is a Made to Measure instrument, your specific build sheet or Certificate of Authenticity will confirm any M2M-specified neck profile variations.

The fingerboard is solid ebony, bound in white and fitted with mother-of-pearl block inlays running from the 1st fret up to the 21st. Ebony is a denser wood than rosewood, which adds a distinct snap and clarity to the attack of each note — especially noticeable when you're pushing clean tones or chord work that needs to cut through. The fingerboard radius is 12 inches across 22 medium-jumbo frets, and the nut is Corian at 1.69 inches wide. The neck joins the body with Gibson's long tenon joint for maximum sustain and resonance transfer.

Humbuckers, Hardware, and the Rest

The pickup set is Gibson's 490R in the neck and 498T at the bridge — the pairing that's been standard on the Les Paul Custom Modern Collection for decades. The 490R uses an Alnico 2 magnet and is voiced for warm, articulate rhythm tones; the 498T runs an Alnico 5 magnet and delivers a hotter, more aggressive character suited for lead work and higher-gain playing. Controls are straightforward: two volume and two tone pots wired to a Switchcraft 3-way toggle. There's a wide range of tones available here from the neck pickup alone, and the jump in output and character when you switch to the bridge gives you two distinct voices to work with.

Hardware throughout is gold-plated, including the Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece and the Grover Kidney tuning machines. The headstock carries the split diamond inlay that's been a Les Paul Custom hallmark since the 1950s, with five-ply binding completing the look. Gold speed knobs, black pickup rings, and the classic LP Custom plastics round out the cosmetics.
