A Classic Rock Machine in a Head-Turning Finish

If you've ever watched Angus Young tear across a stage or heard Tony Iommi's earth-shaking riffs, you already know the Gibson SG. It's been the guitar behind some of rock's most iconic moments since 1961, and this Silver Mist edition brings that same legacy with a fresh, eye-catching finish. Part of Gibson's Custom Color Series, this SG Standard pairs vintage-inspired specs with a metallic silver look that stands out whether you're on stage or in the studio.

The SG's double-cutaway design isn't just about looks—it gives you unobstructed access all the way up the 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. The solid mahogany body keeps the weight down while delivering the singing sustain and rich harmonic depth Gibson's known for. With a rounded mahogany neck profile and a long-tenon set neck joint at the 19th fret, you get both comfort and structural stability that translates to better resonance and sustain.

This is a guitar built for players who want classic Gibson tone with the playability to match. Whether you're laying down bluesy leads, driving rock riffs, or exploring heavier territory, the SG Standard delivers.

490R and 490T Humbuckers: Vintage Voice, Modern Bite

The heart of this SG's tone comes from its matched pair of 490R (neck) and 490T (bridge) humbuckers with Alnico II magnets. Gibson voiced these pickups to capture the character of late-era PAF humbuckers, but with a slight bump in the upper mids for a more contemporary edge. That means you get warm, fat tone when you dig in, but roll back the volume and they clean up beautifully.

The pole pieces on each pickup are aligned to match the string spacing at their respective positions, so you get balanced output and clarity whether you're working the neck pickup for smooth jazz tones or cranking the bridge for sharp, articulate leads. The two-volume, two-tone control layout with a three-way toggle gives you plenty of tonal flexibility without getting complicated.

Playability That Made the SG Legendary

The SG Standard's rounded mahogany neck profile has been a favorite among players for decades. It's substantial enough to give you a solid grip for chording, but not so chunky that it slows you down when you're moving up the neck. The bound rosewood fingerboard features medium jumbo frets and acrylic trapezoid inlays, all dressed with a Plek'd fret job for smooth, consistent action across all 22 frets.

At 24.75 inches, the scale length is classic Gibson—slightly shorter than a Strat, which means easier string bending and a warmer, slightly thicker tonal character. The Graph Tech nut measures 1.695 inches (43.05mm), giving you comfortable spacing without feeling cramped. The gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish on the neck feels smooth under your hand and allows the wood to breathe and age naturally over time.

Hardware and Appointments Built to Last

Gibson outfitted this SG Standard with an aluminum Nashville Tune-o-Matic bridge and aluminum stopbar tailpiece, a proven combination that delivers excellent intonation and sustain. The chrome-plated hardware includes Grover Rotomatic tuners with kidney buttons—smooth, stable, and road-ready. The black 5-ply full-face pickguard is a signature SG detail that sets this model apart visually while protecting the finish.

The gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish isn't just about aesthetics. It's a thinner finish than modern polyurethane, which means the guitar resonates more freely and develops a vintage patina as it ages. The headstock features Gibson's iconic logo and crown inlay in mother of pearl, and the black 2-ply bell truss rod cover is engraved with "SG."
