The Classic SG, Now in a Bold Vintage Finish

If you've been waiting for an SG that breaks from the usual cherry and black finishes, here it is. The SG Standard '61 is now available in custom colors, and this TV Yellow finish brings vintage Gibson vibes with a sunburst-era aesthetic that stands out onstage and in the studio. In 1961, the Les Paul model was put on hiatus, and an all-new design evolved into what is today known as the SG or "solid guitar." This reissue stays true to that original design with a SlimTaper mahogany neck and a bound rosewood fingerboard. Whether you're into classic rock, blues, or heavier genres, the SG's lightweight double-cutaway body and neck-through-the-22nd-fret design make it a go-to for players who need speed and access across the entire fretboard.

Each SG Standard '61 is built in Nashville, and this one's no exception. The combination of solid mahogany body with the classic double-cutaway SG shape, complete with the iconic deeply sculpted body scarfing and double horns gives you that unmistakable SG silhouette. The rosewood fingerboard and precision-leveled frets were dressed leveraging advanced Plek technology, so you get a setup that's dialed in right from the factory. This is a guitar built for players who want the look, the feel, and the sound of a 1961 original without hunting down a vintage piece.

Mahogany Tonewood and Long Tenon Construction

The SG Standard '61's high-quality mahogany body and neck produce rich, full-bodied tones that sound even better when pushed with overdrive or distortion. Mahogany's warm midrange character is why the SG has been a staple for rock players since the '60s. But it's not just the wood—the mahogany neck's long tenon gives this SG Standard '61 monstrous sustain. The long tenon extends deep into the body cavity, adding mass at the neck joint for better energy transfer and that singing sustain the SG is known for.

The mahogany neck has a fast-playing SlimTaper profile and is capped with a bound rosewood fretboard that is equipped with 22 medium jumbo frets and acrylic trapezoid inlays. The fretboard has a 12" radius, so it's comfortable for first-position chords, and lead lines played higher up the neck won't fret out. The SlimTaper profile is exactly what it sounds like—slim enough for speed, but with enough shoulder to fill your hand comfortably. The nut width is 1.69" (43mm), which is right in that sweet spot for both rhythm and lead playing.

'60s Burstbucker Pickups with Hand-Wired Controls

Two hum-canceling Gibson '60s Burstbucker pickups facilitate spine-tingling vintage tones just like legendary PAF pickups. These aren't generic humbuckers—Burstbuckers represent a leading re-creation of Gibson's original 1960s-era PAF humbuckers, complete with slightly unmatched coil windings and Alnico magnets that capture the character of the originals. You'll love the tight low end, rich midrange, and rowdy highs of these pickups—they clean up beautifully when you roll back the volume, but they'll also push an amp into natural overdrive with authority.

Controls feature audio taper potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors, and the whole control assembly is hand-wired. That means when you roll off your tone or volume controls, the signal stays clear and responsive instead of getting muddy like cheaper mass-produced wiring. The two-volume, two-tone layout gives you independent control over each pickup, so you can dial in different tones for neck and bridge positions and blend them with the three-way toggle.

Classic Hardware and Period-Correct Details

The nickel-plated hardware includes a classic-style ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece that help contribute to the model's excellent sustain. The ABR-1 is the same bridge design Gibson used on the originals, and the lightweight aluminum stopbar keeps things responsive without adding unnecessary weight. The SG Standard '61 is equipped with smooth-turning Vintage Deluxe tuners with Keystone buttons, which are both functional and historically accurate to the early '60s models.

The SG Standard '61 features a 5-ply teardrop-shaped pickguard, which is the smaller pickguard style introduced in 1961—not the larger batwing guard that came later. The old-school nitro gloss finish and smaller period-correct teardrop pickguard add to the vintage authenticity of this reissue. The scale length is 24.75" (628.65mm), Gibson's classic short scale that makes bending strings easier and adds warmth to the overall tone.
